Meet Kortney Hastin of NORMAN RUSSELL in West LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kortney Hastin.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kortney. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started working retail during college. Then took a break from retail to become a substitute teacher. Did that for a year. Realized that teaching wasn’t a huge passion of mine. Ended up moving to LA immediately after my teaching career was over. Jumped back into retail. Shortly after getting into retail, I found a job on the wholesale side of the business. I was now “corporate.” I worked in the wholesale side of the business for eight years.

Moving up the ranks from a Sales Associate, to Regional Manager, and ending as a National Sales Manager. After working for a handful of brands and seeing how they evolved and expanded. I thought to myself if they can start an apparel company, why can’t I? That’s when I decided to launch NORMAN RUSSELL.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a little and a lot of both, haha! The struggles for me is that I’m a one-man show. I don’t have a business partner. I don’t have a design partner. It’s just me. There are many aspects of the business that I am not that good at. Mostly the digital realm of things. i.e. Social Media, Web Updates, etc… Basically, I’m digitally innate.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with NORMAN RUSSELL – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
NORMAN RUSSELL is a modern denim brand that has evolved into a small collection I value quality over quantity. I create small-batch goods from carefully selected high-end unique fabrics. I only produce limited runs, and personally hand-number every pair of jeans that leaves my shop. If I’ve done it right, my customers will appreciate the philosophy, the material, and the hard work that goes into everything I make.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The thing I love best about our city is the diversity. I think we all can agree that the worst thing about our city is the traffic!
