Meet Koko Kennedy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Koko Kennedy.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m a singer, songwriter and visionary from Los Angeles, California. I’ve been singing since the age of nine and I grew up singing in the church. I fell in love with music at the early age of five years old, when my uncle would play old school music in my mother’s living room.

I recall sneaking out my bed and walking into the living room, where my uncle would play music from the 60’s and 70’s on the radio. I’m pretty sure I was annoying with all the questions I would ask. I began making music after high school with my sister Mecca and we formed a duo group by the name of “Pharaoh.” Those days were so much fun!! I recently released my first solo album, ‘KOTOWN.” It was hard work, but I am so proud! I want to inspire people to keep pushing for their dreams, no matter what age and set a reminder that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Working on finishing my album was one of the most amazing experiences in my life, but it wasn’t easy. In most cases, living in LA is a struggle because sometimes we don’t support our local artists as much as we should unless they already have a name. So it was a bit of a struggle to find serious and committed people to assist with my project. In addition, being a woman is a bit hard with everyone trying to hit on you! LOL. But I must say, eventually, things worked out perfectly and I really enjoyed the process.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My name is Koko Kennedy and I’m an artist from Los Angeles California. I write my own music and I also, in a way arrange, and co-produce as well! I’ve been on this journey for ten years now. I feel absolutely blessed to have grown so much, but it has not been easy. I am most proud of the fact that I’ve kept going and have not given up on my dreams. I hope to motivate others who are on a journey and may feel like giving up because of their age or circumstances. KOTOWN is an old school and new school vibe wrapped in one. I’d call it cruise music, or cleaning your house music. It’s meant to make you feel good. Throughout the years, I’ve struggled with finding my voice, or simply being appreciative of my talent. I struggled with my tone and wishing God would have blessed with other singer’s voices and I constantly compared myself. But I’ve grown to accept myself and I appreciate what God has bestowed upon me. I feel like when you let go and simply be 100% your authentic self, that’s when things fall into the right place.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Although I do feel that it’s all about being in the right place at the right time, I think it’s hard to control being lucky or unlucky. I would say blessed or walking in your true self. Once you become serious about your dreams and believe wholeheartedly that you can achieve them, somehow “luck,” or what I’d like to call “blessings, become inevitable.
