Today we’d like to introduce you to Klyn Elsbury.
Born with cystic fibrosis, Klyn started her career from inside hospital walls, asking the question, “why can some people accomplish incredible feats even when it seems as if their world is falling apart?”
She leveraged the information she uncovered in hospital walls and applied it to her recruiting career, where she won multiple awards. In 2015, her health plummeted and she started spending upwards of 6 months a year in the hospital. Giving up her career, she decided to write her first book, I AM ___ The Untold Story Of Success. Using Linkedin between treatments, she got national news coverage regarding pharmaceutical pricing gauging and her book skyrocketed to becoming a bestseller, allowing her to get off of social security and build her own recruiting company. She had it all. And yet, something was missing.
After she received the highest rating ever for a keynote at a national entrepreneurial conference, she listened to the voice in her head that said “go for it.” And MK Foundation was born.
She immersed herself into the field of neuroscience and neurolinguistic programming and started getting booked for keynotes and corporate workshops. She launched her online course, Shark School, teaching marketing and sales principles on social media and ELEV8, a peak performance coaching program. In 2019, just two years after getting off of social security, she hit six figures and through strategic partnerships in 2020 she created her first 7 figure deal.
During COVID 19, she was approached to create Sickly Confidential, an empowering blog sharing personal growth strategies for women dealing with chronic conditions, rare disease, invisible illnesses, and those suffering with undiagnosed conditions.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve been hospitalized 67 times in 32 years, ranging in length from 4 nights to 6 months. The most common duration of a hospitalization is 14 nights.
In my mid-twenties, I lost my 6 figure corporate career in recruiting and had to file for social security disability as I was labeled end-stage. Meaning, the disease progressed so badly that I didn’t have much time left.
That was when I decided to write my first book from the hospital, I AM ___ The Untold Story of Success.
I was denied coverage for a new drug coming out that would halt the progression, so took the media exposure and got on NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt. I got the drug along with other patients in California, and was immediately signed to an agent and started speaking on embracing change, resilience, and overcoming fears.
Sickly Confidential – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Let’s talk about the blog, Sickly Confidential as this is where most of my time goes lately. This is the place where we dish all about dating with a chronic condition, invisible illness, rare disease, or even a terminal illness. It’s real, fresh, unapologetic, and helps women feel more confident and empowered, often translating to more success dating.
We use neurolinguistic programming (Think Neil Strauss, The Game but for women with chronic conditions) to help you discover the best parts of who you are and how you’re programmed. Just because you have a health condition does not mean you are a burden or unworthy of love. We are setting out to change that narrative.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me comes from my studies of Hawaiian culture. They believed that success is the ability to trust your gut. When faced with indecision, I close my eyes and breathe in for a count of 4, exhale though my mouth for a count of 5. This resets my parasympathetic nervous system. And then I ask myself, “What decision do you feel compelled to make?” And then that voice, I trust 100%.
