Meet Kiyoshi Iwai of CERO Bikes in Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kiyoshi Iwai.

Kiyoshi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Over 20 years ago, I moved from Japan to California. As a passionate surfer, I have always loved the outdoors and cared deeply about the environment. After living in LA for many years, I became increasingly concerned with climate change. I saw first-hand the growing traffic congestion in every part of the city and that’s when I realized, I wanted to be part of the solution. I looked to find a sustainable alternative to the standard household vehicle and found that electric cargo bikes were the perfect solution to our modern transportation issues. From there, I partnered with two veteran bicycle engineers to design and develop the CERO One.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey to launching the CERO One came with many challenges. In the beginning, my largest challenge was that I was a newcomer to the cycling industry. This tight-knit community has been around for centuries and I needed to put in my time before being accepted. After facing many closed doors, I decided to go to “bicycle school” in Oregon and attended countless trade shows in an effort to find partners for my new project. Over time and through sheer persistence, I eventually connected with the right partners who shared my vision of electric cargo bikes as a real transportation alternative to cars. It’s been three years since we proudly created the CERO the company from scratch. Now, the challenge is to grow our brand and to raise awareness in America around the sustainable benefits of riding an e-cargo bike.

Please tell us about CERO Bikes.
CERO is a family owned and operated business out of Los Angeles, California where we offer high-quality electric cargo bikes with visually appealing designs. We are proud to carve out our niche in the e-cargo bikes category, which more than traditional e-bikes, gives riders the cargo capacity they need to go about their daily lives: commuting, taking kids to school, grocery shopping, etc. Unlike other e-cargo bikes on the market, our first bike, the CERO One, offers a custom-designed 12-way modular cargo system which allows riders to customize their bikes and carry all their necessary cargo with ease. In the city of angels, where a car is a king, we’re also proud that we’ve created a local company that asks people to reconsider their car use and to consider a bicycle, as their main mode of transportation.

  • Bike starts at $3,399
