Meet Kitty Thee Madam of Madam Norma Jean Gang in Boyle Heights/Beverly Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kitty Thee Madam.

Kitty, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In the 90’s I was a L.A. Gang member who had lost over 15 childhood friends to gang violence By the time I was 15, These were smart, good kids who just happen to choose the wrong path in life. I thought for years what if these kids had the opportunity to do something great with their life what would that look like? And it looked like Madam Norma Jean Gang and in 2009, I launched MNJgang. With the idea of positivity. Love and worldwide sister/brotherhood. Witch is the core of what being a gang member meant to me. I took out anything and everything negative and made MNJgang about everything positive I learned from the streets. Loyalty, fearlessness, leadership and organization are just some of the assets I was able to bring to the mnjgang business table. I made a very conscious decision to change the trajectory of my life by turning what most might see as a negative past into a positive future. I was going to navigate my own story of this culture that many don’t have access to so many negative assumptions are made. This was my reality, my world and I was going to tell it my way, and get rich while I do. Our products are representative of who we are and where we come from. And that authenticness has a power that resonates with so many people.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not been an easy one. There was a lot of people who said and thought Madam Norma Jean as a gang would never work. But I always knew the value in mnjgang. There are so many people who want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. And mnjgang celebrates everyone. That’s what we are about. We are a Gang not a brand a GANG of badass, fearless, hustling go-getters who happen to appreciate looking fly daily.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Madam Norma Jean Gang story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a luxury lifestyle Gang that sells products that make you feel fly, powerful and bring out your gangsta. We launched with a denim collection for women in 2009. Currently, our T-shirts are the star of the show. And are currently working on a summer Unisex collection made from our signature purple bandana that will represent the cool California street vibe. And in fall, we will be launching a seven shade of all red lipsticks that flatter all skin types.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a total tomboy I hung out with lots of boys but also had a lot of girlfriends I have always been super streetwise and knew at a very young age that I loved nice things. As a kid, I didn’t even know we were poor because I never left my environment. It was only cause I collected fancy house magazines that I knew we didn’t have those things. I grew up in a housing project in Boyle Heights that was different from most projects in the area simply because we had a melting pot of different races and everyone got along. So I never experienced any racism growing up what so ever. And I believe that alone has allowed me to have look at people’s characters first. I feel so fortunate to have grown up where I did. I am everything I am because of my little ghetto L.A. childhood that was full of neighbor love, culture and rainbow-colored people.
