Meet Kitty Schur of The Collective Rising

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kitty Schur.

Kitty, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up on the east coast before heading west to attend film school at The University of Southern California.

After university, I worked a few jobs in content development and production before finding myself working in a newly formed political-digital department at a talent agency. My time there led to my involvement with some of the most notable women’s empowerment movements of 2018 (including TIMES UP and The Women’s March), as well opened doors for me to serve as a creative director, planning conferences and events in the women’s advocacy space.

During this time, I began to notice an undeniable two-fold issue.

Firstly; despite women being more intelligent and accomplished today than ever before, opportunities for professional discovery, recognition and advancement are few and far between as obstacles stemming from today’s cluttered digital media landscape act as barriers to entry. I noticed myself and other professional women feeling left out of this new “post or it didn’t happen” culture. Though I was taught that “it is what you do that matters, not how many people know you did it,” I started to notice in 2018 that things were not so black and white anymore – women can no longer deny the importance of having a visible personal brand.

The second issue I noticed was a lack of curation. In a world where you can find seemingly everything, it has become increasingly difficult to find the best of anything. Conferences and events looking for speakers and companies looking to hire were having an increasingly difficult time sorting through “candidate clutter” and were seeking a pre-vetted, curated and time-saving solution to accessing and contacting talent.

The Collective Rising was built to address these issues. For our TCR members, we remove the stress, confusion and discomfort often associated with the topic of personal branding. We help our members get ahead by providing them access to coveted job postings and opportunities for them to share their expertise on panels or at conferences (which are predominantly virtual these days!) For our company and event members, we provide access to top-tier women and help facilitate opportunities for them to engage our demographic of influential women.

These days, while running The Collective Rising, I am back and forth between Los Angeles and London (I am currently pursuing my master’s degree in Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship at The London School of Economics). My team and I have spent the last few months operating the BETA version of our platform, and our community now consists of over 7300+ members. We are looking forward to on-boarding more members throughout the end of this year and have plans to expand our platform’s offerings in early 2021.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been an ongoing challenge working to redefine not just what people find influential in 2020 but getting people to really think on how credibility is and should be established.

From my experience, if you are trying to forge your own path, you are likely not going to be walking on smooth pavement. However, what you learn on the journey, and even more importantly, who you become throughout the process, makes any obstacle you have to overcome undeniably worthwhile.

My team and I are incredibly passionate about not only helping influential women be found online and have access to new opportunities for professional discovery and recognition, but we are also committed to helping broker interactions between our members and those looking to support women’s advancement. As shown by the results of the 2020 U.S. election, the world is clearly ready and looking for more powerful and qualified women to lead.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Collective Rising – what should we know?
The Collective Rising is a membership community that provides self-identifying women with newfound access to opportunities for professional discovery, recognition and advancement.

We aim to help our members be discovered professionally and seize more opportunities for expertise sharing (whether it be leading keynote addresses or by partaking in panels).

The Collective Rising breaks down the barriers to entry, as it pertains to being discovered and considered for professional advancement opportunities by supplying members with an SEO-optimized, meta-tagged, and alt-tagged profile. Users first select their objectives (which are not visible to other users and non-users). From there, they are prompted to select and answer questions that showcase their expertise and empower them to share what they want the world to know about them in a comfortable, op-ed like format.

We decided on this format for the profile creation because several recent studies have shown that women tend to sell themselves short when asked the general question, “tell me about yourself.” By prompting our members to answer targeted questions that align with their objectives, we help them be seen as they wish to be.

In today’s world, there is no such thing as a true first impression. On average, over one billion names are Googled every day, and over 90 percent of people google someone before they meet them for the first time. Pair these facts with the statistics that 75 percent of people say they lack unique or positive content on the first page of Google search results and that over 70 percent of recruiters and HR professionals say that they have rejected candidates solely due to a lack of information available about them online, and you begin to understand why having a visible personal brand is so important today.

Empowerment cannot exist without visibility. The Collective Rising utilizes SEO technologies to help women who do meaningful work get discovered online. For example, let’s say you are a female entrepreneur who works in media in Los Angeles. All that information is going to be optimized on your TCR profile. Next time someone searches for “top female entrepreneurs in media in Los Angeles,” your name and your profile on The Collective Rising will come up in that Google search. For myself and my team at The Collective Rising, this is a game-changer. By helping influential women bypass the “rules and regulations” of traditional influencer culture, our members get the visibility and recognition they deserve.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My openness and warmth are two traits that have served me well over the years.

Genuine connection and supportive energy are everything to me. I think that my community’s members and partners sense that my desire to bring amazing people together and help them shine is something that is quintessential to my being.
