Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirk Rogers.
Kirk, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Well, I worked for corporate America for 25 years and finally decided I didn’t want to work a 9-5p job anymore. In 1999 I had an idea to hang and display my guitars. I started small, I built myself a prototype in my own garage and started selling them on this new place called “eBay”.
I went from making a few dollars to hundreds of dollars. I put every bit of profit I earned back into the company and sure enough, it really started to grow! I used the internet and got a website, both of which helped keep the momentum going. After a few years, I was contacted by Amazon.com. They had noticed me and urged that I sell through their site. This was a newer department for them but they helped get me started and I really started making good sales!
In the first few years selling on Amazon I learned a lot! I learned that if I am making 50 products and making a few thousand dollars per month that I’d needed to start making more products to truly reach my annual financial goals. Now I have over 800 products on sale on Amazon.com! And, you know what? I don’t stop. I keep creating more stuff and see it if sells, I don’t listen to others when they criticize what I do, I just keep adding to my numbers. I listen to my customers, and instead of building what I think they want, I build whatever they need and want. I build everyday products, make them well, build them right and they’re all made right here in the USA.
So… I’m kind of a display expert. I had a person from my church ask me, “Can you build me a footstool?”, so I did! I made them 2 footstools and 5 to list on Amazon. I posted them on Amazon.com on a Friday and they were sold by Monday! Now I have over 180 different types of footstools. Padded, bedside, pregnancy, guitar player, garage and more. It is like Santa’s workshop at my shop.
See, I just worked hard, did what I needed to do and I figured it out along the way. I took classes, I read books, I got help when needed. As an inventor, the idea for something just comes out and you need to give it a try. See if this is the product that will make an income for you. That’s what I do daily.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No way, it was hard knocks. I struggled with the idea of my guitar hangers being made and sold to musicians. I took a survey and found out they wouldn’t buy them. It took me weeks of trying to figure out what my audience would be. Finally I realized that the person who would buy this was not a serious musician, it would be a mom! One whose kid has a guitar and is looking for a solution to keeping her house organized. Bingo. I took all my descriptions and had a woman write them, my income doubled.
