Meet Kirk Nix of KNA DESIGN in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirk Nix.

Kirk Nix is an international name in luxury design. As the lead and founder of Los Angeles based KNA Design firm, Kirk has been the artistic eye behind everything from 5-star hotels, gourmet restaurants and sprawling estates across many continents. Venetian, Ritz Carlton, Conrad, MGM, Fairmont, Caesar’s Palace, Starwood and Disney are but a few on the brands that regularly turn to kirk for interior design branding. In addition to his extensive interior design portfolio, Kirk has also designed collections of lighting, fabric, mirrors, rugs and furniture. &

I started in Atlanta working for a man by the name of Stan Topol. A small firm, and therefore had the early opportunity to do a little bit of everything; Design, architecture, furniture, fabrics, purchasing- basically soup to nuts. It was heaven. After designing the first Disney owned and operated hotels, I had the chance to relocate to California to work with my mentors: Wing Chao and Michael Eisner. A dream come true. Everyone in Los Angeles had a tan and a convertible. I wanted to join the club. 20 plus years later- I am still here.

What’s my motto?: Perseverance. As head of KNA, Kirk oversees the staff encompassing architects, certified designers, production and administrative support. Over the last 12 years, Kirk has positioned KNA Design as a leader in the commercial design field and has come to be recognized by the resort industry’s most preeminent developers and operators as an important new talent with worldwide importance in interior design. His repeat clientele today include venerable barons of industry such as Sheldon Adelson of Sands Corporation, Isadore Sharp of Four Seasons, and Bob Iger of Walt Disney.

As a testament to his indomitable talent and enduring relationships, Kirk has repeatedly received the extraordinary compliment of being commissioned to design the private residences for internationally renowned hoteliers and celebrity clientele.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I was a true believer that starting my business would be the simplest and the most organic thing in the world. To control my own destiny and work side by side with the folks that share my work ethic. At this juncture, it has been the best decision I ever made but it wasn’t always easy.

In 2008 we had millions of dollars in work and we were easily supporting over 55 employees. But that year the market crashed and we had over 2 million in new endeavors go on hold indefinitely. We learned a valuable lesson that day and started to employ tactics in regard to spreading our work into different sectors and keeping a more diverse client base. Not too many eggs in one basket if you know what I mean. The formula has worked well so far.

KNA DESIGN – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Comprised of over 25 talented professionals we all subscribe to one mantra: we are a service-oriented business and each of us brings something of value to the table. We have one goal: to deliver the best possible product no matter what the restraints.

Two things:
-When we start a new endeavor everyone contributes and comes to the initial kick off.
-We want a consensus and the principal idea to appeal to everyone and be thoroughly vetted.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
From authenticated old-world European interiors to pure and progressively contemporary environments, to wildly exotic themed entertainment experiences, we are constantly developing a universe of solutions. It’s not any one moment but the collective of each and every project that gives me a true sense of satisfaction that perhaps I have indeed chosen the right career path.

Well over 60% of our clientele are folks we have worked with previously. I like to tell myself we did something right the first time or we are simply a lot of fun to work with and they keep coming back for more. You tell me.
