Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirk Green.
Kirk, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Graduating high school, I worked in my father’s construction business for several years, I learned about the fundamentals of foundation, structure, etc. How it all worked made sense to me but it wasn’t creative enough at the time. I moved on and attended Ringling School of Art & Design where I learned the power of color, space and scale. My creativity led me to Los Angeles where I entered the world of set decorating and art direction. This is where I was able to apply my past experience and where it began making more sense in the bigger picture. This experience wasn’t just about being creative, it was about time management, establishing dependable resources, budgeting and orchestrating a crew all in a short amount of time. I loved bringing an empty set to life but it was disheartening to watch all my hard work being dismantled and taken away. It was these times that I didn’t feel like I was making a difference. I heard about Home Staging and how it was impacting the Real Estate industry. This new world motivated me to learn more so I redirected myself and was hired as an assistant to a home stager. My experience quickly moved me up the ladder to a lead designer position. It was in this position where I found my niche, a way to help people and make a difference. All of the pieces started falling into place perfectly and DECOR REVAMP was born.
A few years ago, I staged a house for a very sweet older couple. Sadly, they needed the money for medical expenses due to her husband’s recent illness. They were so accommodating as we moved things out, around and brought things in to get the house ready for the market. All in all, they received multiple offers above asking price and they were so grateful and happy! I received smiles and hugs on our pick-up day and it was awesome! These types of situations are plentiful and every time I experience one it makes me love what I do even more. Last year, the wife of the couple I mentioned contacted me. She wanted to recreate a room in her condo and needed my help. She greeted me at the door with a hug and a smile. She showed me around the condo they had bought and told me how much she had learned from my designing/staging tips.
They really did a great job! We ended the tour at a closed door to a room where she said she hasn’t been since her husband passed and began to cry. She hadn’t shared this until that very moment. This is where the time clock stops ticking and my heart starts giving. It was so hard not to be emotional with her as I told her how sorry I was for her loss. I reached out to hug her and she accepted. She gave me a little backstory on him, thanked me for listening and we walked through that door together. It’s in these moments that I am so grateful to be a part of something so impactful and to be so instrumental at the same time. It’s priceless. It also assures me that I am in the right place, doing the right thing. With some effort, we transformed the office to an inviting guest room for her guests who were arriving in a few weeks. She loved the end result and thanked me for taking such good care of her. It was a blessing for sure. I’m excited every day that I get to do what I love to do.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a smooth road for the most part. I would say the challenge is keeping up with the demand for our services. Our clients have such a great experience with us, they spread the word and the work flows in. We have been expanding our inventory, storage space and staff to accommodate. I guess if this is a struggle, it would be trying to help everyone! I welcome this because I see it as I’m in the right place at, the right time, doing the right thing. It’s pretty fantastic!
Please tell us about DECOR REVAMP.
DECOR REVAMP is an interior creating/decorating/home staging business that not only has the ability to transform spaces beautifully, we put our heart and soul into every project. Our home staging division has been the leading contender for us lately. We are also known for our creative designer eye without the crazy designer fee! I am most proud of DECOR REVAMP by how we operate as a business. I am a firm believer in the fact that if you truly love what you do and you can see the benefits it provides others, it’s okay to allow your heart to absorb some of those benefits and not just your wallet. This, I believe, is one of the many things that sets us apart from the rest.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have many favorite childhood memories. The one that relates to what I do today is, I always rearranged the furniture in our house. I would use my mom’s scarves to wrap around the lamp shades or pillows to add different colors to the room. I’d move the art and mirrors around as well to keep with my theme. Haha! A teenager thinking about themes. My dad would walk in the front door, stop, look around and say, “Kirk’s at it again. I thought I was walking into someone else’s house!” Or if he was working late and we were all downstairs watching TV, he’d walk into a dark living room and run into a chair or the coffee table and call out my name, “Kirk!!”. He caught on and checked the house numbers before walking in and turned on a light to ensure his safety before entering the room. LOL! It drove him crazy then but we laugh about that today!
