Today we’d like to introduce you to Kira Jones.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My wellness journey began in 2015 when I was in undergrad with a full academic schedule, an internship, and two part-time jobs. In all honesty, working that hard was causing me major stress and anxiety, so I turned to fitness and meditation as a way to release that pent up energy and calm my mind. I quickly became obsessed with feeling my best all of the time & started to clean up my diet & adjust my habits. Around this time, as my internship came to a close, I started working front desk at Equinox in Lincoln Park, Chicago. One thing led to another, and six months later, I was promoted to a Membership Advisor position and relocated to Santa Monica, CA.
I loved this job because every single day, I got to see people at their peak; post-workout endorphins and all. It was around this time that I started to realize that although most everyone feels their best when they’re taking care of themselves, our current society creates little connection between workplace culture and wellness practices. When you think about it, we spend the majority of our adult life working! So, shouldn’t we feel our best during this time?
So in 2019, I set out to combine my business background and passion for wellness & productivity in the form of a blog, Cacti Wellness. Flash forward to 2020 and I’ve launched ‘Cacti Wellness Collective’.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Although building this business has been so exciting, I’ve certainly had my fair share of struggles. For one, when I was blogging, I was making the majority of my income through Freelance Marketing Consulting & COVID-19 kind of flipped my world upside down. The first few months were really touch and go because in full transparency, I was not READY to launch videos for Cacti. But “start before you’re ready” are words I live by & I dove headfirst into the content creation world.
Since May, I’ve spent countless hours teaching myself new software, building out video capabilities on our site, learning the SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand) industry, getting my Personal Training Certification, and making a TON of editing & filming mistakes. That being said, with every failure has come a huge learning lesson & that makes me excited to keep pushing through the struggle.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Cacti Wellness Collective story. Tell us more about the business.
Cacti Wellness Collective is a digital membership designed for ambitious women who want to take care of business while taking care of themselves. We provide unlimited access to virtual workouts, guided meditations, and productivity workshops, and we keep everything under 20-minutes to help our members efficiently & effectively achieve their goals.
Cacti was truly designed for women who “don’t have time” to work out or start a meditation practice because they have too much work to do (trust me I’ve been there!). We are really proud of how inclusive our community is and that our members come to us for sustainable lifestyle changes. It’s not just about getting fit in 30-days, it’s about consistently showing up for yourself, even if that just means 10-20 minutes a day in a way that will better your life from a holistic standpoint.
Something that sets us apart from other wellness brands and memberships is the way that we incorporate productivity/career into our content. On average, people spend less than 3 hours per day on productive tasks, so although we may not feel like we have available time for wellness practices, it’s really about learning how to use time more wisely in order to fit in all of our priorities. Because of this, we have a Productivity Workshops series that teach members how to increase productivity with expert advice, specific strategies, and software tutorials for programs that maximize time.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Hmm, I don’t know how I feel about luck! I especially don’t believe in bad luck. I think everything happens for a reason and is a teachable experience (even though there are certainly times where it doesn’t feel that way in the moment).
For example, I could consider my adolescent anxiety and depression diagnosis “bad luck”. But, if I didn’t have these struggles, I may never have found wellness as an outlet and therefore, I wouldn’t have this business.
On the other hand, I think good luck could also be considered good timing. In that sense, I’d say that as horrible as the global shutdown was, it provided good timing for Cacti to launch on-demand, online wellness & work from home resources for people who were not able to go into their gyms, studios, and offices.
