Meet Kimia Arya

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimia Arya.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Life is a crazy rollercoaster and will continue to make us go through the same lessons until we learn from them. Throughout my journey, I have experienced both the highs and lows, and one thing I always say to everyone is to Never Give Up. As cliché as that sounds, it’s a cliché for a reason. My story definitely began as a starving artist, with lots of no’s and closed doors, but I Never Gave Up. I will leave you with three things I have practiced throughout my life and have helped me with my personal success: Wash out the no’s, hone your craft, and finish when you are done, not when you are tired. The rest is history.

Please tell us about your art.
As an Artist and Fashion Designer, I design my own textile prints, which are inspired from my own original paintings; I create oil, acrylic, and mixed media paintings. I then use my graphics and through the process of digital printing, I transform my silk fabrics into large wearable paintings. Each design is part of a bigger image and in turn, each image is its own unique print. I then play with these silk images and create fashion pieces based on how I would like the image to present itself on the body. Every piece I make, from scarves to jackets to ties, I always consider how the image will appear on the body. Every individual wearing my pieces thus becomes a living art, and to me, that is the most beautiful end result.

What people should know about my work is that I also strive to pay homage to the Old Masters’ paintings and shine light on the importance of painting as an art form. I only create a limited edition of each design, and since each print is unique, you get the same sense of the rarity of painting as an art form. During my adolescence, I was extremely fortunate for the opportunity to be classically trained at a very prestigious art school that introduced me to art as a skill. I was highly influenced by the intricate and delicate works of Da Vinci and Michelangelo whom were way ahead of their time in their artistic abilities. I think the skill of paint to paper is becoming extinct. I think technology is slowly taking over all of the art forms, and I want to show that we can marry the two without losing the other. That is why I like to add a touch of elegance and timelessness to my pieces by creating limited pieces of each design, in hopes to inspire a new generation of painters.

What I hope people will take away from my work is my style. From the delicate hand preparation to the unique cross stitching finishes and custom designs, I want the individual wearing my pieces to feel bold, confident, empowered, and comfortable in their own skin, and to want to continue making bold fashion statements. I put a lot of care and thought into the process and production of my fashion pieces, much like my paintings, and I want people to manifest that same importance to detail into their everyday lives. Our individuality is what makes us unique, and we need to learn to embrace it. “Fashions fade, style is eternal.” Yves Saint Laurent.
