Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Harris.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love for music began at a very young age, growing up I was very shy in public, but in private I loved to sing and dance especially to my favorite artist of all time, Janet Jackson! I can vividly remember me at home performing the “Rhythm Nation” album from start to finish, I was about seven years old.
I started writing poetry in Kindergarten, my first poem was dedication to my mother, it was called “mother soul”, my teacher helped me decorate it with a colorful border. I remember my mom cried the first time she read it, she thought it was very sweet and funny, and she has it framed and hung up at her home till this day. I felt so good with my mother’s reaction to her poem that I fell in love with writing and I’ve never stopped rhyming since.
I wrote my first official rap song in the 3rd grade for a homework assignment. We were learning multiplication, and we had to present what we knew, while everyone else’s performance was very basic with no creativity, I seen this as my first opportunity to perform in front of a real crowd. So when it was my turn to present, I had one of my male classmates play the Busta Rhymes, “If you really wanna party with me” beat on the desk with his hand and a pencil as I recited my multiplication rap… “This is Mathematics and we go to school/ to learn our times tables and follow the rules/ and 11 times 1 is 11/ 11 times 2 equals 22/ 11 times 3 equally 33, now do you follow me?…” The class went wild, everyone was so impressed, my teacher especially, as she has me perform for other classes afterwards. I became pretty popular around Inglewood as the little girl that can rap!
I began to pursue music seriously in high school, went I started recording my music in the studio setting and registered with ASCAP as a songwriter/composer/publisher. Along my journey, I’ve performed at local bars, house parties, cyphers, colleges, night clubs, and pretty much anywhere I could find a stage or audience to showcase my talents. One thing I know about pursuing a career in entertainment, is you have to be “hungry”. Especially for an artist with limited resources, I faced many challenges over the years due to financial difficulties, and lack of support with production costs. I learned that there is much more than just writing, recording, and performing music, and true success must involve a team!
So, in 2019 I paired with my boyfriend “LA Fleek” (Studio Owner/Videographer) and bestfriend “Michael Manchester” (Music Producer/Engineer/Artist) and opened “Beachside Recording Studio” in Westchester, CA. We specialize in Music Production of all genres, and are open to the public seven days a week! My role at Beachside Studios; outside of being a music artist; is recruitment, artist development, and event coordination. Our first live showcase was scheduled for Sat, March 21st, 2020, but was unexpectedly canceled due to the Corona Virus Pandemic. It involved 15 local music artists, including myself “Kimistri with no C” to perform at the Pomona Farmers Market on my mother’s 60th birthday. It was disappointing to not be able to perform because we rehearsed so hard for our performances, however we look forward to coordinating our next event soon!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, it takes “hunger” as I mentioned earlier to be successful in the music industry. Being an independent artist means you are financially responsible for your music, which in turn is your product. I found many times that my passion and reality were on opposite pages. There were many times that I could not afford studio time and had no access to music engineers or producers. The quality of my music suffered, I did not have the rights or permission to record to a lot of instrumentals, and I lacked having a particular sound and look, which I am still working to develop.
