Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Dillon.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am always surprised that I have had the career I have had in Cannabis. I tried Cannabis for the first time in my early 30s. I always say that D.A.R.E worked for me. I was working in brand management of Clorox no less, and my anxiety and insomnia were through the roof. A friend gave me a bit of a brownie and I had the best sleep of my life. After that, I got my medical card, but always hated buying Cannabis, I felt like a criminal.
At some point, I didn’t think any of the brands were speaking to people like me, people who wanted the wellness benefits of the plant. I joined an early-stage startup – so early that we worked out of an old master bedroom and the product – a cannabis balm – was being made out of crockpots in the kitchen. In the next two years, I helped grow that brand from an underdog to one of the most recognized brands in Cannabis even to this day. My team was one of the first to do CBD sound baths and yoga sessions before it was technically legal nationwide. And while I loved that work, I knew I needed to build something for myself and my community. MY efforts were destigmatizing cannabis for sure, but not necessarily to Black and Brown communities and I felt by creating my brand, I could make sure that I was supporting BIPOC folks all along the value chain.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
CBD still operates in a grey zone. So we cant advertise as easily, we pay twice as much for banking services, and lots of retailers still don’t take CBD products, despite the fact that I don’t think of Frigg as a CBD product, cause quite frankly we source some exotic organic ingredients that are just effective and in fact cost more than the CBD, but we pay a “CBD” tax on doing business because the industry is so new and unregulated.
Please tell us about Frigg.
In an age of burnout, modern stressors take a huge toll on our skin and hair. That’s why we’ve developed plant-based functional formulas that help support our emotional well-being while combatting beauty problems like dry flaky skin and scalps, thinning hair, and premature aging.
Our hero ingredient is the hemp plant, the ultimate adaptogen for bringing the body back into balance. We use a wide range of cannabinoids for their mood-supporting properties, but also because hemp is one of the most regenerative crops known to humankind. We use many parts of the plant in our formulas and plan to use it in our packaging as well.
What makes us different:
1) We have a scientific advisory board which is rare for a beauty company.
2) We are focused on ingredients and product form factors that reduce stress in the body.
3) We are diverse and inclusive at our core. We think about diversity from the farmers we work with, to the vendors we partner with, to the stories that we amplify in our branding.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Well, we just launch five weeks ago, so we are still in it. I think perhaps celebrate all wins.
