Today we’d like to introduce you to Kibwe Trim.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kibwe. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago and moved to the U.S.A as a 17-year-old kid after receiving a basketball scholarship to attend Sacred Heart University in Connecticut. I spent five years there and turned professional once I graduated. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and a Masters Degree in Information Technology.
Most of my basketball career was international, having played in 7 countries over a ten-year professional period!. While still playing, I founded The DreamChaser International Foundation which is a 501 c 3 nonprofit organization that provides tutoring mentoring and financial aid to young people in underserved communities across the globe.
After retiring from my athletic career, I also launched a company called L.A.Lime. L.A.Lime is a company that curates varying social networking experiences that bring people and business together!
In line with my nonprofit work and the youth and corporate speaking that I do, I also authored a book titled “From Nerd To Pro” that talks about my journey transitioning from an introverted, academically inclined kid to a championship-winning professional athlete!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Is it ever a smooth road? Growing up on a small island that was considered a third world country posed many social and economic problems. I did not come from a wealthy family and being 6 feet 4 inches tall with a size 14 shoe at the age of 14, I struggled to find shoes or clothes that fit me properly.
Basketball was the tool I used because I knew it would provide the opportunity for me to gain a scholarship and afford an education. Although I could not see how it would actually happen coming from a small island that not many people even know about I was fortunate enough to see that dream come true!
After my first year in college, I suffered a back injury that I thought was going to end my career before it really got started! I sat out a year to rehab and I slowly got back to full strength! I overcame this trying time and was able to finish my college career and fulfill my dream of going pro!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about L.A.Lime and The DreamChaser International Foundation – what should we know?
The DreamChaser International Foundation provides tutoring mentoring and financial aid to kids that are doing well academically and in some type of discipline whether it be sports, the arts, entertainment etc! We use varying innovative ways to encourage and motivate young people. We’ve undertaken shoe drives, toy drives, athletic camps, workshops, and panel discussions among other things in an attempt to reach youth far and wide! We are proud to have serviced thousands of kids globally and we continue to expand our outreach efforts each year!
L.A.Lime is a company that curates various social networking experiences that bring people and business together. With a broader network, one has greater access in life. Access is the cornerstone of power!
Our first L.A.Lime event was a mixer that comprised of seven people at a local bar! We are proud to have grown over the years and now curate events that see hundreds of people attend and in many cases, they end up building new business relationships that often turn into money-making transactions!
In each case, what sets us apart from the rest is actually US. Our people are our biggest asset and every member of our team embodies the values that endear our clients and supporters to us. Without clients and people to support a business, there is no business!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I give credit to my family! My mom, dad and three siblings for always supporting me in all of my endeavors. I always give credit to my first ever basketball coach Taye who started me on the journey leading to a pro career! My aunt Nicole in California has always been my support as well. There are many coaches along the way that have also impacted me one way or the other.
As far as mentors in business, I’ve honestly struggled to find those! My experience has been that there weren’t that many people willing to offer even advice without a price tag! I also must give credit to my wife, who is my backbone and is right next to me in all of my endeavors. She plays a major role in coordinating daily operations of The DreamChaser International Foundation as well as L.A.Lime! I am blessed to have her by my side!
