Today we’d like to introduce you to Khiyon Hursey.
Khiyon, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got started in the business through working on musicals while I was in college. Through working as an assistant on several broadway shows, I was able to network and make connections to make the leap to television writing.
Has it been a smooth road?
It certainly hasn’t been without its struggles. I had a difficult time figuring out how to make money, working odd jobs, navigating the ins and outs of the business (this was before Twitter was big)…but I wouldn’t change a thing. I learned so much, even from the struggles.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
So I write musicals.
I write musicals for tv and film with a writing partner.
I write musicals for the stage by myself and with other collaborators.
I’m probably most known for being the music assistant of HAMILTON (now on Disney Plus!)
In Hollywood or theater, there aren’t a lot of black writers of musicals so that certainly sets me apart haha.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see more inclusion, for sure. As black people continue to trend culture, we will see an uptick in content representing out bodies and stories.
