Today we’d like to introduce you to Khalia Taylor.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Sure, well my name is Khalia Taylor. I was born in Brooklyn, NY but raised in Boston, MA. I’m 27 years old (a Leo, lol). I enjoy most things fashion, styling, creating. But I also enjoy directing, not movies or anything, but fashion films and music videos.
I guess you can say it all started in middle school when I became slightly obsessed with sneakers. Then that led to clothing, in general. I had to wear a uniform from the 6th-12th grade and the only way I was allowed to express myself was through footwear. When I turned 22, I decided to take fashion a bit more seriously. I started styling and curating photo shoots in Boston. Eventually, I figured out I can actually make this a career so I partnered with one of my best friends, Sabrina Saint-Louis (may her soul rest in peace). We formed a styling duo named “2 Style Crew”. Last year, in 2018 – we decided to visit LA, and both fell in love… so we decided to move. Unfortunately, life doesn’t always work out how you want it, so I ended up moving to LA (November 2018) and Sabrina stayed in Boston. About a month into my move, I got a styling internship with a stylist, Zoe Costello. Then, about three months later, I got a styling assistant position under stylist, Jenna Demaio. I’ve been in LA for about 10 months and been through some of the most real things I’ve ever experienced in my 27 years of living. But, the opportunities are endless, and my career is flourishing so, I don’t really see myself giving up.
Please tell us about your art.
My art is a look. I feel like I have a certain eye and I love being able to execute that for others to see. Whether it be through myself, or dressing someone else up. I love styling. I think being able to get dressed and look amazing – makes you feel amazing… even if you’re prepping for a sh*tty day. My inspiration comes from myself and my surroundings honestly. I don’t really know what to call my style, its definitely streetwear haute couture tomboy type thing going on. I love dressing in a gown and a cute heel but I’m not afraid to kill it with a sneaker or a boot. I want people to appreciate my confidence because it’s coming from a purely humble place if that makes sense. I think it’s contagious for sure.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I don’t think success has a cap or a limit. Every time I feel really successful it only lasts for so long because there’s something else I want to do. I guess accomplishing goals defines success to me; like personal goals that might seem impossible to others or even yourself. I think the two qualities of being honest and never giving up are the essentials to being successful. Lying to yourself and others only last for so long, just be real. And I noticed that most goals are tangible. They only seem so unrealistic because we lack resources but I believe as long as you’re working towards it, you’ll get somewhere and eventually… there.
