Meet Kevin Torf of T2 Tech Group in Torrance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Torf.

Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Early on, I was always fascinated by electronics and new technology. My father would have me disassemble electronics and put them back together. Then, I got into programming and developed a software program that helped predict future movie rental habits based on your rental history.

Growing up in South Africa, you’re required to serve in the army. So, I managed to find my way to into the digitalization of military data where I was responsible for coordinating and facilitating the processes utilized for entering the data.

Over my career, I have orchestrated the design and implementation of numerous complex IT infrastructure deployments across the globe, including some of the world’s largest communication network systems.
I am currently the co-founder and managing partner of T2 Tech Group, an IT consulting firm specializing in the healthcare industry. We help strengthen organizations by leveraging our experienced team, balancing business and IT, providing unbiased solutions, all while using a proven project management methodology.

Prior to founding T2 Tech, I started and managed several tech companies, including Intelliverse, Mobile Gaming Technologies, Inuntius, Tornado Development and Torsys. With Mobile Gaming Technologies, I launched the product Bet Tracker, which was used in over 100 countries around the world. At Intelliverse, I developed an IVR (interactive voice response) to help large companies speed up their call flow process. As founder and leader of Inuntius, I lead the design of one of the first commercial VoIP systems sold directly to consumers.

During my time at Tornado Development, Inc., I managed the development of Tornado Development multi-media messaging platform which sold globally. At Torsys, I lead a global networking firm that provided strategic development and management of critical network solutions for some of the most recognized names in business and education, including TCI, AT&T, UCLA, Xircom, Microsoft, Symantec, Packard Bell and Starwood Hotels.

As a native of South Africa, I have traveled to more than 30 countries to conduct business and attribute my diverse technology background to the different people and cultures I’ve encountered.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting your own business is never easy. In the beginning, I was young, hungry and thought I knew everything… and still, do (haha!)! I was quickly humbled when I kept getting turned down left and right for consulting opportunities. However, one of my philosophies I still live by today is to be able to adapt to change – be Agile. So, I had to take a step back to understand, take a look at a high level and readjust my approach. After focusing my efforts on my technological strengths in network infrastructure, I started seeing the light towards the end of the tunnel. I really found my niche. In consulting, and specifically with our firm, we have to be able to adjust to our clients’ needs. These needs are always changing because technology is always changing. Because we specialize in the healthcare space, this technology is responsible for peoples’ lives. Our success not only affects a hospital’s business goals but could literally mean life or death for a patient. Our business is challenging but also very rewarding.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about T2 Tech Group – what should we know?
Our team of engineers, project managers and executives provide premium IT consulting services. We specialize in healthcare (hospitals and hospital systems) but have also worked with a range of other industries like government organizations and commercial businesses. As a vendor-neutral and transparent group, we focus on making sure optimal technology changes directly improve workflows, care, and business processes. We are true partners and advocates for our clients, ensuring we meet their overall organizational goals.

Because we are a professional services company, we are predicated on our people – we don’t sell any products. We look to employ good people with outstanding work ethic and character. Our employees become co-owners in our client’s vision for success. So it’s important that we hold ourselves to a very high level of integrity and value how we conduct and present ourselves to clients.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I always looked up to my father and he taught me that character comes first. That has since translated into our consulting business. Our company is supported by our people and their good character. As a team, we have to be supportive of each other and our clients in order for us to be successful.
