Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Gaylor.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kevin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
9 years ago I was completing my bachelors in business management. The final project was to create a business, including a 5-10-year plan for success. I came to the conclusion that since I enjoyed Djing, being a musician (drummer), and had a passion for people and fun, I would start a DJ Company. After completing my class project and earning my bachelors in business management, I began Djing in local bars and any event that I could while starting out to gain exposure. The Road was rough due to low pay and being in a saturated market with over 2500 DJs in my area alone. I learned that I had to have a niche or try a specialization that separated me from the crowd of DJs in the market. I did my research by attending as many weddings as I could in a 3-6 month timeframe as a guest. What I found was that the Wedding DJs weren’t DJs at all, they were merely Human Jukeboxes, playing one song after another from a popular playlist. There was no mixing during dancing, the MCing was super corny and the DJ seemed out of touch with the entire event. I decided that there was a need for an authentic wedding DJ that could connect with the wedding couple, guest and read a crowd to get the party started and keep it going. The first year as an official wedding DJ for me felt comfortable and like I was doing what I was meant to be doing and making a difference in the wedding industry. That year I DJ’d roughly 20-30 weddings and a ton of parties for family and friends. Each year I have grown and have honed my skill as a DJ and wedding host. 2017 will be Musical Phunktions 9th year as a wedding DJs and now have 3 DJs, a contract with a reputable wedding venue in the Inland Empire and is seeking to add 1-2 more DJs to keep up with the demand for our services.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth, but it has been rewarding. The biggest challenge has been setting our experience apart from other DJs and companies in this saturated market, staying relevant and on top of the ever-changing wedding DJ trends.
Musical Phunktions Celebration DJs – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Musical Phunktions is a celebration DJ/MC company that specialize in wedding doing and Mcing. Our clients have mentioned in reviews that we are fun, organized, well dressed and care about our couples and their event. What sets apart from other DJ/MC companies is that we offer an authentic, fun experience and we connect with your entire event from the initial consultation to knowing and understanding the honeymoon location. We do our research to ensure that we can consistently offer an unparalleled experience. We stray away from cookie cutter playlist, while maintaining an appreciation for music and conversation that cross a wide range of individuals. We are most proud of our 2016 year with Djing over 200 weddings between three DJs/MCs.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career so far was being able to offer a fun, fairytale wedding experience at no cost to a very young mother of 2 who had been diagnosed with cancer and only had months to live. Each year we try to offer this experience to a couple in need whose going through difficult times, but still deserve to have their dream wedding or event.
