Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Davi.
Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I graduated with my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Northeastern University in 2014. After a year working in Phoenix, I moved out to Los Angeles to be the director of a physical therapy clinic in Santa Monica specializing in orthopedics and pediatrics. After seeing how popular yoga was in my new area, I signed up for a teacher training and quickly started teaching yoga. Since then I’ve started to work for myself specializing in home visits where I adjust my client’s yoga practice to deliver physical therapy services in a more palatable way that they enjoy participating in.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the major struggles to physical therapy is insurance. Many people expect me to accept insurance but unfortunately most insurance companies will not pay enough to allow for one on one treatment sessions. I’ve found that in order for them to heal I really have to show up and be present with one patient at a time. Juggling multiple patients at one time gets us nowhere. So balancing what the expectations of a physical therapist are along with what I believe to be essential components of an effective treatment program has been challenging.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Family Health PT story. Tell us more about the business.
I pride myself in one on one treatments, coming directly to you and adjusting my physical therapy approach into a way that suits you. If you’re a yogi, I’d love to create a yoga practice that encapsulates all I want to do as your physical therapist. If you’re a runner, everything can be centered around your running practice. Basically, I want to adjust what you’re doing rather than fit you into a pre made box of what I think you should be doing.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think that I’ve been very lucky in what I do. My degree is something that I’ve worked incredibly hard for, and it allows me a certain degree of respect from the studios at I teach at to the clients that I see privately. But it is still all about being in the right place at the right time to meet the people that you can help. My father always tells me to show up in the best way possible at every class I teach because you never know who may be taking. Most of my clients are group class students who have reached out to improve their practice so that it better fits their body and goals.
