Meet Kerry O’Donoghue of The Mine Company in Manhattan Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kerry O’Donoghue.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In February 2019, my fiancé proposed to me near our home in Manhattan Beach. Previous to my engagement, I could not understand how brides could get so stressed and overwhelmed with wedding planning. Weddings are such beautiful events where families and friends come together to celebrate the happy couple. How could organizing a fun day be so stressful?! Well, I was surprised to find out first-hand that when you enter the engagement stage with your soon-to-be life partner, the stress hits you like a ton of bricks and most of the time this wedding-induced stress has nothing to do with logistics.

After speaking to other brides and reading nightmare stories of the drama brides have had to deal with from the countless bridal Facebook groups I am in, I recognized that every bride shared in the stress I experienced in some way or another. It was obvious that wedding-related anxiety was overwhelming for all, and I knew self-care was necessary for brides. Moreover, I was surprised to find that there were no bridal brands that addressed the importance of self-care during this pivotal moment in one’s life. Therefore, in 2019 I launched my brand, The Mine Company, and I made it my mission to create a line of self-care products that would bring brides joy when everything else was stressing them out.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building The Mine Company has had its fair share of challenges. As a self-funded company, executing my dream product line has been slower than I would like. I have a huge vision for The Mine Company, however, I learned that creating premium products came with not only high manufacturing costs but high minimum order quantities. This held me back in being able to expand my product line from the onset. I had to launch with two products versus the five to ten that I would have liked for a complete bridal self-care kit. However, I wouldn’t change a thing about the way I launched as I absolutely love the first product I brought to market, and I am excited to share that I have two new products launching very soon.

The Mine Company – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Mine Company is a direct to consumer wellness brand for the modern bride. We are growing our collection of self-care products to enable brides to escape from the stress that comes with wedding planning. The Mine Company is known for our premium on-the-go ring and jewelry cleaner pen called Crystal Clear Carats. This product is meant to be a bride’s ‘something blue’ and it works like a tide-to-go pen for cleaning engagement rings and bridal jewelry. A sparkling bride deserves a sparkling ring, and I am proud of creating a product that brings joy to the newly engaged bride.

The Mine Company is different from any other bridal brand since we provide self-care products. While there are plenty of bridal subscription boxes, bridal jewelry brands, and Etsy shops galore that sell products for the bride-to-be, there are no other brands that address wellness during this highly stressful time in one’s life. Our mission is to keep brides in a state of bliss for the entirety of their engagement.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career was when I took the leap to leave my corporate marketing job to become an entrepreneur. I always knew I would have my own business one day and making that change was frightening and exhilarating at the same time.

Since launching The Mine Company, my most proud moment has come from seeing top-tier influencers share my product, Crystal Clear Carats, with their followers on Instagram. These influencers have done so for free because they loved my product and it resulted in great sales for my business. Influencer fees can be quite high, especially for a scrappy new e-commerce business, so receiving accolades from beauty and fashion influencers who receive countless amounts of products from larger brands was a very proud moment for me.
