Meet Keoni Marcelo of Creatives At Play in North Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keoni Marcelo.

Keoni, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I always had an urge to be creative and throughout the years, I kept searching for the best outlet to express my creativity. I started from dancing, making music, fashion, then graphic design. I had a friend who did music and decided to shoot a music video for them after buying my first camera(Canon T3i)!

Ever since I picked up that camera, I haven’t stopped shooting videos. Primarily focusing on getting better and expressing my creativity through a cinematic process. My whole life, I wanted to find the best way to express what was In my mind and film making provided that for me.

I’m from Oakland California and we don’t have too many films or music videos with production being made unless it’s a small budget, I left home and moved to Los Angeles to chase the dream l. I knew I needed a portfolio or something to show so I wrote a short film and directed it. With my past videos and new short film, I was able to find myself an Agent. Through my agent and word of mouth through the industry, I’ve been successfully been able to work with some of the biggest artists of my generation!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. I’m sure every filmmaker can attest to living check to check, shooting anything for a couple of dollars or editing a video for free just to get paid on the next one. Or having treatments being stolen and seeing the video directed by someone else.

I think the road is only as smooth as you pave it. Meaning I worked my ass off on or off the clock, especially when no one is looking, and that’s what made the struggles more bearable for me but nonetheless they were there…still are.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Creatives At Play – what should we know?
Creatives At Play is a media production company that focuses on film, music videos, commercials, and short-form content. I’m extremely proud of the journey we’ve been through, starting off with no budget films to producing and creating some amazing videos…especially being a student of YouTube, I didn’t have the privilege of being able to go to film school.

Our company is known for all forms of film work, but as a Director I am most known for music videos. The music industry gave me a new found love for the camera, and I really feel like I can take the emotion and energy from a song and turn it to a visual piece.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think my most important characteristic is my open mind. Every project I create has to capture what the client is looking for. Whether it be a specific scene that they see or an emotion they want to feel during a certain segment, I want to give that to them. And with having an open mind, I am able to understand why they want it and also visualize how I can recreate the intention the client is looking for.
