Meet Mackenzie Sheehan of Kenz with the Lenz in DTLA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mackenzie Sheehan.

Mackenzie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always enjoyed taking pictures and capturing moments, but I bought an entry level DSLR in 2018 to mess around with back home in Tacoma, WA. I started out casually taking pictures of friends and random events for fun but quickly fell in love with the craft and ability to create. I started learning as much as I could from YouTube, and other photographers on social media, and started to craft my own style.

I’ve always been a big fan of music and live shows, so I started going to friends shows and shooting for them to practice in low light and quickly fell in love with that live aspect. I moved to Los Angeles in October of 2018 and started meeting up with artists I had previously connected with on Instagram. One connection led to another and more opportunities came up, and I started building my network and my brand. I upgraded my camera and equipment to be a better asset at live shows and in low light settings and started taking the opportunities coming my way as more than just a hobby.

Has it been a smooth road?
I am my biggest critic, so I’d have to say being open to the creative process. Worked on some projects in the past that turned out great, but thinking there is more to be done, or learn. Just being open to that aspect of consistently being a student of the craft and always developing my skills or learning more. After moving here, I connected with a lot of different people and brands, some great and some not so great. Definitely connecting with the right people that value you and your work helps a lot, and it’s great to give love for others art and get love in return.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My personal brand is “Kenz with the Lenz”. I specialize in Concert, Lifestyle/Streetwear, & Portrait Photography. My background is in Marketing so I have started to get into short videos for promo purposes. I’m most proud of the adjustments I’ve made since moving to LA and adapting to the city. Branching out and making connections with some great people. I’m genuinely always super chill, so I know it makes the shoot easier and a more comfortable setting with the people I work with. You can currently catch me working with Social Cypher, shooting for various artists for the indie music platform.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is so eclectic, it would be perfect for anyone to start out here. A huge reason I moved here is because I enjoy a lot of different activities and have quite a few hobbies. Los Angeles has it all, so it’s prime location because you can explore any different avenue of photography here, as well as connect with people in the same realm as you!
