Meet Kenya and Cyndrea Mathews of Lit and Live Fridays in Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenya Mathews, Cyndrea Mathews.

Kenya , Cyndrea, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We often found ourselves vibing organically in our home, one singing while the other played the keys and recording videos to post on social media. Soon our friends began to join us and we created a series called “The Couch” where we would have our talented friends and other local artists showcase their talent in an acoustic setting. This sparked the inspiration for our live event series called Lit and Live Fridays where we provide up and coming artists the opportunity to not only showcase their talent but make a little change for their pocket as well.

We noticed that in LA, though there are many platforms where artists can perform, they either perform for free or even have to “pay to play.” With our show format we wanted to give our performers the opportunity to make a percentage for every ticket they sell. As an artist and musician ourselves, we understand the struggle that comes along with pursuing your dreams and we believe that even someone starting out should be able to be compensated for sharing their talent with the world.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of the main challenges we’ve faced has been finding an affordable venue to house our show. Being that we’re just starting out our budget isn’t huge so we’ve had to really prioritize and pool our resources to make it happen. But this obstacle has also inspired us to want to open our very own venue where we can not only host our shows but rent out to other artist and bands as well. So stay tuned for that.

Lit and Live Fridays – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in giving local artists a platform to showcase their talent.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For us, success is watching the crowd react to seeing raw talent and just having a good time. Our number one goal is to create an atmosphere of good vibes and energy where artists feel empowered.
