Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenya Hughes.
Hi Kenya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Im Kenya, a REALTOR® with Keller Williams. When my husband left the military, we had our then one year old Jay, we made a plan to get into Real Estate together! I was going to be a realtor and he would do the construction and flipping for me.
Fast forward a year after chasing a few entrepreneurial opportunities, I landed one that brought us to California, it failed but… With about $300 and $1100 in savings from our tax return we flew to CA and started our Journey. We both enrolled in school. I enrolled for courses at LA Valley College. I majored in economics and minored in R.E. We spent our first three months homes-less moving from hotel to shelters with Jay until we secured the place we currently still occupy.
I got my certifications in 2016 but sat on taking my exam until June of 2020 during the height of the pandemic pretty much because of fear. I was tired of being taken advantage of in my role as a portfolio property manager and felt God was calling me to leave that job and go into Real Estate full time. I’d already been having trouble with the company and hadn’t felt appreciated for all that I contributed so it was an easier decision to make.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all! Real Estate is mainly about the connections you have and create. It’s a huge referral-based business. Although I had been living here for a while, I didn’t realize the depth and power of my sphere of influence. It’s so important in our industry to refer to that sphere because in most cases that’s where 80% of your business comes from, they are the people who trust you, know you best and can vouch for you. I didn’t realize the people I had in my corner rooting me on so I missed out on a lot of business in the beginning because of my lack of confidence in what I had and my ability to ask for help! During this transition I’d experienced grief with the loss of two children and so many other obstacles of unknowns being the first in my family to own a business and have such a “grand” expectation for myself and my life.
I have the pleasure of nurturing and raising three beautiful boys ranging in ages from 9 and 2, so maintaining a household, a healthy marriage and family to the best of my ability was and still is a lot of work! As a working mom, wife and business owner I learned that there is never enough time in the day, so to make sure I include the things that feed my body, mind and spirit above all else. I can’t pour from an empty cup. There are so many additional hurdles that are not talked about often enough but that’s a big one to start!

EVERY MORNING!!! Please wake up to Nikki Walton on Go(o)d Mornings with CurlyNikki. It’s a great podcast! Favorite books include anything romance for a nice escape. But I love biographies, “The Year of Yes” by Shonda Rhimes is a favorite audible go-to between books. I’m currently reading and loving the Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins. I love the simplicity behind such a complicated subject.
