Meet Kenneth Alexander, Freelance Makeup Artist in Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth Alexander.

Kenneth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Originally, I went to school for art, after I graduated my sister and I decided to go to makeup school. I had no idea about makeup, but I knew I liked art and I knew I loved movies so why not combine the two worlds.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far, I’ve been very fortunate with my opportunities, but that being said it hasn’t been easy. The film industry is super rough and not consistent whatsoever. The hardest part is just trying to secure your next job, it’s always a struggle no matter how long you’ve been at it. Me being at the beginning of what I hope to be a long career; I am constantly juggling multiple jobs with minimal amounts of sleep.

Kenneth Alexander – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As a freelance makeup artist, I represent myself; which is great because I can work as little or as much as I want (to an extent). That being said, I can accept or decline certain jobs based on availability or the subject matter.
I would say that special effects makeup is my strongest skill so I tend to take more jobs in that field. Prosthetic work is my favorite thing to do for sure but I nerd out when I get to do a really cool paint job! Put those two together and that is what I’m most proud of, I couldn’t be happier doing what I love for a living.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment so far is being part of the team for the American Horror Story ad campaigns for season 6 and 7, it was a surreal experience that was very very hard work. We had a great team department headed by Kerry Herta. I learned a ton from her and many other people on that team who were nice enough to share their knowledge.
