Meet Kennedy Daniel of “In This Together” Youtube Channel in Mid City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennedy Daniel.

Kennedy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
“In This Together” was born out of a need for more unique and innovative content on YouTube. YouTube exists as a unique platform that allows people to create a visual diary in order to tell their story. However, I had felt as though lifestyle and beauty channels had become incredibly over saturated with individuals saying and doing the same thing while sharing the same opinion.

Because of this feeling, I understood very early on that if I wanted to start a channel, I better have something different to say. Although I am so glad that YouTube has become a space where anyone can produce content, I believe as creatives it is our responsibility to prioritize how our art will push the culture forward- not help it remain stagnant. I was extremely uninterested in following a traditional model of what it means to value beauty and fashion online. If I am going to do something, it better be interesting, unique and honest.

“In This Together” is my own personal mood board for how I move through the world. It captures the artistry of my mind and tells an honest story. My channel never is and never will be about how many subscribers I get, rather a space that prioritizes collaboration and honesty.

Has it been a smooth road?
I had the idea to launch “In This Together” a very long time ago. And as I slowly pieced together various ideas for my channel, I eventually put the project down and abandoned it for quite sometime. However, returning home to a quarantined Los Angeles from a three months stay in London was a complete culture shock. Watching the world around me change so drastically made me hyper aware of the fact that I desperately needed a creative outlet. I craved the feeling of starting a project and seeing it through. You cannot make excuses for not exploring your creative intuition when you are quarantined.

My biggest struggle has most definitely been equipment. I shoot exclusively on my phone (not by choice but because it is currently most convenient) and previously edited everything on iMovie (I have recently graduated to Premiere Pro). That being said, I constantly run into obstacles of how to make my videos look as professional as possible without any professional equipment. While that has been a struggle, I most definitely live for a challenge and I have learned so much about my creative process as well as myself.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am extremely impassioned about not only highlighting my love for beauty, health, wellness and fashion but also my passion for encouraging conversation. I think the greatest gift you can give to anyone is the gift of inspiration. I want my videos to inspire creativity in the lives of my subscribers. When I create a makeup video it’s less about the products I use and more about the hope of inspiring someone to try something new. It is less about the way the cosmetics look and more about inspiring someone to get out of bed, do their makeup and start their day.

What sets my channel apart from others is that we take lifestyle to the next level. We examine beauty from the standpoint of self-love and self-indulgence. We are a community interested in and devoted to making a space where everyone can feel like they have a seat at the table. Collaboration is a huge part of “In This Together” and each piece of artwork highlighted on the channel is created by a friend. What is the point of making a creative space if you cannot share it with others? Growing up watching my parents collaborate with their artistic community has been one of the simple joys in my life. Observing as they create space for minority artists in our community has impacted how I view my role in my own community. It has made me consider, “What good can you create from this platform?” Art is not selfish, art is inclusive.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is an incredible space for a YouTube channel to thrive. It is inspiring to intermingle with so many different kinds of creative people and learning about their process is an absolute honor. Surrounding myself with people who I admire is incredibly important to me. Seeking inspiration from movies, tv shows and music is vital however, being inspired by the people you work with, the friends you live with and your everyday acquaintances is the biggest gift. My intention while in Los Angeles is to collect as many creative people as I can in order to learn from them, collaborate with them and offer my support.
