Meet Kelly Wood of School Kids Yoga and Mindfulness in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Wood.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
In 2002, parents who attended classes at my yoga studio in Los Feliz, mentioned that it would be great if I could go into the schools and teach their children yoga and meditation. The doors started opening for me to go into public schools and have continued as such for 15 years. I teach 20-minute SCHOOL Kids Yoga & Mindfulness classes during the school day to elementary-aged children, seeing about 800 children each week. I also offer professional development for LAUSD teachers to learn the methods of SCHOOL Yoga & Mindfulness. LAUSD teachers meet with me for the in-person course and ear one salary point. I now offer the SCHOOL course on-line for educators throughout the country. SCHOOL Yoga & Mindfulness methods are adapted for ages K-12.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have pioneered this work for 15 years, serving as a volunteer for 85% of the time in public schools. In 2002, the awareness of the need for grounding and calming methods for learning during the school day was minimal. Giving my time and having the good fortune of being allowed into schools has helped greatly to raise awareness of the need of addressing a comprehensive approach to well-being – physical, mental, emotional, and social balance for academic achievement.

SCHOOL Kids Yoga & Mindfulness – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
SCHOOL Kids Yoga & Mindfulness methods are tested across 15 years of direct experience in Los Angeles Unified School District public classrooms for effectiveness.

The expertise of the SCHOOL philosophy and methods help to:
Manage classrooms
Regulate children’s emotions
Draw out positive social behavior
Reduce the stress response & improve grounding
By engaging the entire classroom, SCHOOL Yoga methods remind both students and teachers of the joy of learning.

I am considered an expert in the field of Kids Yoga and teaching beginners. These skills along with the practical and relatable SCHOOL Yoga & Mindfulness approach makes sense to children, educators, administrators and parents.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Every day is worthwhile. I give my best to teach tools to educators and youth that will help them navigate obstacles and various situations in school and life with a more gentle and caring attitude.
