Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Wood.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in San Fernando Valley, Ca. The daughter and granddaughter of exceptional hairstylists. I decided I wanted to do hair once I realized college wasn’t the route I wanted to take. I never thought in a million years I would be this in love with my craft. Luckily for me, I made the decision to go to cosmetology school at a young age. I always looked at that factor in my life as a ‘head start’. I wanted to always make sure I was using my head start to my advantage. So I went about my career a little differently. My first salon I worked at was in Reseda, Ca. Was stubborn, I dismissed everyone’s advice and rented a booth for three days a week for $120. That was the hardest thing for me because I had a very small clientele. I struggled, but it taught me to hustle and be grateful for every client that sat in my chair. From there I bounced to a salon my mother actually worked at when she was my age. Michie’s Place is a little salon also located in the valley, run and owned my a little Japanese stylist who is, I believe in her early eighties. She’s as sharp as a tack, strict, neat, and precise. I assisted her and had my own clients from time to time. She taught me how to be a successful business owner without me even having any desire to run a business. I feel like a lot of the habits I have adopted have come from her little notes of knowledge she’s given me along the way. From there I made my transition away from the valley and worked at a blow-dry bar. That’s when I fell in love with styling, we had such a diverse clientele I got to become accustomed to all hair types. I absolutely loved it. I started getting my celebrity clientele from that salon, I picked up a lot of set work. From photoshoots to music videos and even a reality show. I really enjoy those two worlds and being a part of them simultaneously. Currently, I have opened my own salon in Beverly Hills, I rent a studio with Salon Republic. I create my own schedule and I’m able to have more intimate sessions with my clients. I play great music 😉 we have drinks and eat candy and talk talk talk. I love the environment I have created for myself.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One main struggle I have had along the way is doubting myself and my skill. This was a huge obstacle I had. I wanted to know my worth before I could open my business, I had to learn to have faith in myself.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about KELLY WXXD GLAM STUDIO – what should we know?
I am a renter at Salon Republic Beverly Hills where I have a work studio, KELLY WXXD GLAM STUDIO. The glam studio is my baby. I am able to have the title and responsibility of a salon owner without the stresses of having an actual storefront. I think what I’m proud of the most is the fact that I’ve been able to keep her alive and running. Every year gets better, I grow wiser and stronger mentally every single day. It’s definitely a beautiful growth I’m going through. I specialize in Blowouts and styling. I think the main factor that sets me apart from others is the fact that I put the integrity of the hair first before anything else. I’m the hairstylist that tells her clients no if need be. In the beginning, they’re fussy because everyone wants what they want when they want it, but every single client of mine appreciates me putting the health of the hair first.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
God first and foremost.
MY MOMMA!!!! My mom is the first person who suggested..well insisted I open my own studio. “You can do this! I know you can” she would tell me EVERY time I spoke to her. My mom is my biggest cheerleader and inspiration, My whole family really. Dad, brothers, aunties, uncles, cousins, grandparents. Whenever I’m in their presence they’re always telling me how proud they are. I’m sure they think it’s just passing conversation but my biggest goal is to make sure my family remains proud of me.
My fabulous clients for knowing my worth before I really did. They keep me excited about my job everyday, from giving super helpful ideas and suggestions about the shop, bringing me my favorite coffee just because, birthday gifts and wishes, to trusting me with their biggest moments like weddings and baby showers. I am truly blessed to love the people I work with.
My Besties. My Crew! Every successful business owner should have a solid crew. A group of people ( quality over quantity ) who keep you inspired and level headed. They get you out of the house when you’re in a funk, They pray with you and over you. Without my friends, I don’t think I would be where I am. They keep me sane day by day. They’re my angels. The best part is they all have their own hustle and businesses. We hold each other accountable. You can’t beat that.
