Meet Kelly Park of RedKelly Make-up in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Park.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I had worked film industries as a make-up artist for 13 years in Korea. I am a well-known make-up artist and worked for some famous TV shows and movies. I got bored but still loved my job, so I decided to move to Los Angeles. I struggled to get into film industry, it wasn’t easy. I didn’t speak English well and I didn’t have any connections in the industry. I needed to earn money and study English more.

I moved to New York, worked for a wedding company and also at JJ eyelashes which is one of the biggest eyelash extension salon in Manhattan. I learned a lot about the businesses. After 5 years in New York, I decided to move to Los Angeles to work in the Hollywood movie industries. I started my business with Hill’s Beauty Club, one of famous salon in Korea Town in LA. I had brides every week and build up my eyelash extensions clients in the salon. Finally, I started a small business by myself last December.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No it hasn’t. First of all, language and communicating. I moved to US when I was 36 and I didn’t speak English at all. It was very hard to learn speaking English. Spend much time for practice. Whenever I made mistakes in a conversation with native speakers, I worried if they think me stupid. Sometimes, if I wasn’t able to express what I want to talk, I lost my confidence.

Second, since I have worked for various area as a make-up artist like film, wedding, fashion, and eyelash extensions by myself, managing schedule is the hardest thing. Especially eyelash clients want to see me every 2 weeks or 3 weeks. I can’t even have a vacation.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with RedKelly Make-up – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Basically, I am a make-up artist who does beauty, character, special effect and hair. Eyelash extension was a side job for surviving in the US. However, it becomes very important business like make-up. I can’t say which one is more important or my specialty. I am very proud of myself about that, I am very good at all of them.

I am trying to make a difference with other artists. Still I am learning make-up even though I have more than 18 years’ experience. I am using high quality products for client. Sanitizing is the most basic step. I spend a lot of money to buy good products and disposable applications. I don’t hire trainees to make profit. I am the only worker at my salon. I might have an employee for eyelash extensions later and the employee should have more than 5years of experience.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Right now, my plan is that my business become bigger and famous. I came here one and half year ago and just start my own studio 3 months ago. I need to get a good reputation and more clients. Also want to work for more films. I am planning some short films with my friends.
