Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Ferm.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kelly. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
1989! I boldly walked into a design firm in my silly dress and scuffed white pumps and asked for a job. I told the Principal Designer, “I so want to work with you, I will clean your toilets” … and so I did. Surrounded by great interior design, a high-end fine furnishings boutique and their need for a young, energetic girl just willing to learn, I was able to jump in to the deep-end feet first (which tends to be my way). From merchandising, intro design, furniture buying & travel to the bookkeeping … You name it, I did it. I learned so much, so fast! In my view, I had the best education and intro to the design industry then anyone. As the years went on, my craft improved, my desire to work in luxury homes grew stronger every day. Let’s face it, surrounded by beautiful things, I became a fine furnishings-junky very fast. I LOVE beautiful furnishings, textiles, architecture, objects, relics with history … I love it all.
After years with a few firms, my husband and I expanded our family and decided it was time to go out on my own. The flexibility was needed, and needless to say, I was ready! My small firm took off … and was so well-received. With my construction knowledge, understanding of the industry (a great respect for it), talent to assemble timeless materials and my hard work ethic, it set the course for great growth. From a small office space in our home, to our own a fine-furnishings boutique in Claremont, CA alongside online mini-boutiques, and now our own product lines underway, we tend to be on the “grow”. “I am going to make everything around me beautiful, that will be my life” by the fantastic Elsie De Wolfe probably best describes my spirit.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it isn’t designed to be a smooth road, it is a rich, tumultuous journey, teaching lessons every day.
So many obstacles! Simply being a small business owner is a challenge (the “daily’s” are rigorous), being a small business owner in our beautiful California is also a struggle at times. We pay our dues to operate in our stunning rich state. Being a mother of a large family, running a business … well, enough said there – All working Mom’s reading this article are probably laughing a little … Drafting and breastfeeding anyone? Well, we of course are multi-taskers … A tough economy, that is my least favorite … take money out of the equation for me and I soar. The highs and lows are challenging … A successful business owner must have a strong constitution, an interior designer requires equal functions of their right and left brain, and oh ya, STAMINA . . . Other than that, it is has been a smooth road 🙂
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My husband and I are Principal owners of the interior design firm, Kelly Ferm, Inc. and are owners of the fine furnishings boutique 707 CIRCE LANE (my address when I was a little girl); specializing in residential (new construction, renovation) and boutique commercial work. My team focuses on “impact design” … We design to make a difference; whether it is lifestyle, universal (aging in place is a huge-trend in design), or an aesthetically impactful design, that is our specialty. We are patient, we are on projects for many years (waiting for them to come to fruition) and always excited to try new aesthetics. We are NOT niche designers.
We also own and operate a fine furnishing boutique in Claremont, Ca and have recently launched our pre-curated online mini-boutiques; Pre-assembled aesthetics inspired by Aerin Lauder, Tom Ford, Tory Burch …. and more. We are so inspired by fashion in design and what better icons to allow us to assemble beautiful spaces and offer tasteful, timeless products with these iconic names in mind.
I am proud of many things really; but our commitment to make a beautiful space, to make great friends and life-long contacts. These special relationships have shaped me as a person. Our drive to try new things, work with new palettes, open our eyes to a forever changing industry is so special. We couldn’t be more grateful to be a part of it.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Of course … LA has incredible resources for design. Amazing homes (traditional to contemporary). The demand for fine design is very strong in Los Angles … From education, to the job market to free-lancing, the opportunities are endless … Just don’t forget, you have to work hard … This biz is not all glam!
