Meet Kelly Campanile

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Campanile.

Kelly, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was young, I was always drawn to obscure artwork. Robert Crumb, Ed Roth, Walt Kelly, etc. I really never had much direction or interest in school. That being Said, the cartoonists of Underground comics helped me find myself in my art. From there, I would continue to walk my own path not to be lead by others but to be guided.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was never a smooth road, when I was younger, I went traveling out West and didn’t come back to the East Coast for years. Train hopping a little bit and hitchhiking, living off the land. At least for a little while. This fueled me as an artist, no obligations or rules from nobody.

What else should we know about your work?
I am an illustrator and a painter. I specialize in painted street signs. I will find these street signs damaged on the ground or in other ways. I am proud of the uniqueness of my characters. There is usually a slight influence from my favorite artists in a respectable style.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Stubbornness, good listener, adamite on keeping my style original.
