Meet Keith Cullen of Steereo in Downtown LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Cullen.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Keith. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Being able to take the challenges and opportunities I encountered when I was young positioned me to want to express, share and relate to those through art.

I’ve been through rejection and success in the industry, carefree health and then medical setbacks, and so much more. Music has always been a huge part of my life as an interest, and now as an even bigger part creatively and in terms of my business.

My experience in finding my voice as an artist is what led me to want to create a platform for other artists to share and be acknowledged. There’s so much I’ve learned and have yet to learn, and I wanted to create a space for me to thrive artistically, as well as for others to do the same.

Has it been a smooth road?
I’d say pursuing a career in any facet of entertainment is not going to be a smooth road. At least starting out. In the beginning, you’re told that your sound should be a certain way, or that you should write and sing a certain way— it seems that everyone has an opinion. That input can be helpful at times, but as a new artist, it can also be deflating.

Through those types of obstacles though you really strengthen and grow, whether you want to or not. It forces you to bend to things you may be unnecessarily stubborn on and stick to your guns on the things that really define you artistically. I also was diagnosed with cancer last year, and that alone is a complex journey that changes you.

To be that vulnerable physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually really put things into perspective and allowed me to touch base with my most authentic self. Steereo was like a rock for me during that time too, watching a business that I knew would be so beneficial to so many artists going through a myriad of challenges or struggles really made me feel like I was doing the right thing at the right time.

Of course, starting a business has its own ups and downs, but we’ve been lucky to see it unfold with as much ease as a business can.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Steereo story. Tell us more about the business.
Steereo is radio for rideshare. We are a music distribution company that gets new music played in your Uber, Lyft, etc. This company grew from a need in the music industry that I myself experienced; it is too difficult to get new music to a large amount of people.

Steereo is a digital platform that mimics the radio experience for rideshares. Steereo has a network of rideshare drivers that are incentivized to play the music from the amazing artists on our platform. Our hope is for the passenger to hear a new song or artist they love!

We track engagement with each song so we can provide analytics to our artists in the form of real-time feedback. This can include how many plays and skips their songs get, where in the song it was skipped when volume is raised, when it is lowered, wherein the song the volume is changed, etc. We have found that this is essential for our artists’ growth in the age of digital music.

Steereo is also an expansive brand and community that gives artists a forum to connect through social media, educational panels sponsored by Steereo, and other amazing opportunities. Most recently, we had held a songwriting camp at Capitol Records to bring our artists together to write and learn from one another. It was incredible.

What sets us apart is that we truly focus on the artist, how to help them and give them the platform to express themselves and accelerate their careers with no strings attached, other than to entertain and enlighten.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The music tech industry is constantly changing, and we think it’s going to rideshare.

Rideshare is a space that is currently not being optimized as much as it can be and there is certainly a big market there. Less people are buying cars and driving their own, thus the industry is only growing year by year.

  • Artists can join our platform for $12.99 and gain access to a dashboard and all the various opportunities Steereo offers to our artists!
