Today we’d like to introduce you to Keera Stephen.
Keera, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As cliche as it sounds, in college I would attend parties and events and honestly be unsatisfied with the flow of music. At house parties, I would often “hop on aux” and just play music I thought would fit the vibe of the party. Eventually, I decided to teach myself how to DJ. I saved up some money to buy the equipment. I watched a bunch of YouTube tutorials and just started messing around with the controller and BOOM I taught myself. I started working at a radio station during my last year in college and continued to learn from there. Now I’m not the best, I’m still learning however, I can’t wait to see how my skills develop in the years to come.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road definitely has not been smooth. It can be frustrating trying to balance working a job and pursuing a career as a DJ.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I’ve always had an interest in music. It’s actually pretty funny. My parents had a computer with Limewire on it. I used to spend hours downloading music and making burned CDS or playlists with the songs I’d download. (This is illegal I know) Lol. I played basketball and also ran track and one of my favorite things to do would be to make workout playlists. I’ve always liked fashion, but more so streetwear fashion than high fashion.
