Meet Kedra Hart of Opus Oils in Los Feliz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kedra Hart.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kedra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In the late 80’s, I started formulating my own scents after participating in some Aromatic workshops up in San Francisco.

As soon as I was introduced to the natural pure aromatic essences a whole new technicolor world opened up for me. It was like the moment in “The Wizard Of Oz” when everything suddenly switches from black & white into color. I immediately fell in love with the art of Perfumery. I love to create living, breathing art!

I started my first 1st business in 1988. In those pre-Internet days, it was a completely different ballgame. Everything was very local & starting up my business happened very organically. Friends started asking to purchase my scents & when I was out and about people would follow me down the street wanting to know what fragrance I was wearing so they could buy it. Pretty soon I was juggling wholesale accounts & creating Custom Signature Scents for local boutiques.

I was so young & inexperienced in the business world & I didn’t know that rule of business that “anything can happen & usually does so plan accordingly.” My budding first business came to a sudden abrupt end as a result of the Northridge Earthquake. I had planned for many things, but unfortunately losing my wall & entire collection of raw aromatic materials to a natural disaster, was not among them.

But I’ve always been an optimistic person (something of a requirement in the Entrepreneurial field,) & this minor misfortune turned out to be a blessing in disguise…

I was recruited by Barneys NY, where I had the special opportunity to be one of the developers of The Apothecary Department at the new Beverly Hills location.

My time at Barneys was a fantastic market research opportunity for me when it came to developing our current Opus Oils product lines! At Barneys, I was very fortunate to be on the frontline with an incredible variety of Luxury Niche products. I was able to experience the highest quality fragrance and beauty products available from all over the world and to interact with the public getting their reactions to it all. It was very inspirational to me!

After my stint with Barneys NY, & a few other adventures for seasoning, I felt that I was ready & the time seemed right to start the process of launching another Fragrance Company.

I began product development for Opus Oils in 2000, and it blossomed from there… Now we have upwards of 100 products.

In 2008, we opened up OPUS OILS’ Jitterbug Perfume Parlour in Hollywood. Our Jitterbug Perfume Parlour is a Perfume Atelier where we design Custom Fragrances for individuals and businesses, host “Scent Events” & “Custom/Bespoke Blending Parties,” & teach Artisan Perfumery. The Jitterbug is open by appointment only, which allows us to provide a very special personalized shopping experience for our customers & Bespoke Fragrance clients.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There were certainly many challenges along the way!
For instance, we first opened our doors at the Jitterbug Perfume Parlour just as the financial crisis was really kicking in. It was heartbreaking to see all the businesses around us shutting down one by one. It took a lot of persistence & creative thinking to weather through that time.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
All of our fragrances are hand blended and poured in the traditional methods of the Artisan Perfumers of centuries past.

The current mainstream or commercial Fragrance market feels very industrial and impersonal to me, for the most part. I think of Perfumery as an art form, and I strive to make my fragrant creations reflect that idea… I believe the recent trend toward Niche fragrances in the industry, shows that there are many people out there who are willing to pay a bit extra for a fragrance that is special and unusual.

We are one of the few, niche perfumeries involved in the quickly growing field of Natural Perfumery. We offer select fragrances that are made with 100% natural ingredients. Even our traditional “mixed media” scents contain a high percentage of natural ingredients.

In addition to creating Opus Oils’ ready to wear Fragrance Collections, I specialize in Custom Bespoke & Proprietary Fragrance Design, Home & Environmental Fragrance Design, Olfactory Consulting, Fragrance Education, & Olfactory Art. I am a four-time FiFi® Award Nominee (the Oscars of Perfume), & have been honored with multiple awards for my fragrant creations.

What were you like growing up?
I am an LA Native, which I’ve been told, makes me an actual unicorn, lol.

Even though I was always one of those people who is led around by their nose, when I was a kid I was 100 % Drama, Art & Music & no % Math or Science, so the idea of becoming a professional Perfumer never even occurred to me. I basically stumbled into it!

After graduating high school I spent time living in New York & London studying Shakespeare (HB Studios in NYC & The Royal Academy Of Dramatic Arts in London). Followed by several years of adventures in Europe working as a fashion model.

I was fortunate to live in Paris for part of this time, and it was there that my fascination with all things relating to Olfaction really started to blossom into an obsession. Paris is truly a feast for the senses! Between the flower markets & the crepe makers on every corner, t was easy to get lost in city’s scented seductions. I would get lost for hours in little perfume stores sniffing myself into a fragrant swoon. I even lived over a Bakery for a while… Talk about aroma heaven!!!
