Meet Kayla McPhaul of ShopJanesRoses

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla McPhaul.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, I am a Public Health major at Eastern Michigan University, focusing on Community Health Education, and I have always been passionate about natural skincare, natural remedies, and education of natural practices. My grandmother was into holistic health, and that sparked my interest at an early age. While working an internship at a health-food store in November of 2018, there was a racial incident that occurred with the store manager and myself. After taking this matter to HR and receiving no resolution, I quit my job. After quitting my job, I wasn’t able to find employment quick and had to think, what could I do for money?

I have been making skincare products for myself in bulk for years, and giving away my extras to and family for quite some time because I have suffered from very bad acne, eczema, and sensitive skin my whole life. Never had I considered running any type of business until, being in that predicament to need a source of income immediately.

I posted my Rosewater Face Toner on my Twitter page, and almost immediately got an order! I was extremely excited to see my hobby become a business before my eyes. The people who purchased were seeing phenomenal results, so I was motivated to keep selling.

In December of 2018, at my school, there was a vendor show for students to sell products. I was invited to sell, so I took a chance and went! The customers loved the toner because of the results and requested that I make more products. Since I had never considered going into business, I had to take a step back and make sure I was staying committed to 100% natural skincare that shows results and truly aids in calming, clearing, and hydration.

After doing my research, in January of 2019 I expanded my product list to 6 100% natural products that help with skin ailments like eczema, and psoriasis, dark spots, pH levels in skin, hair enhancement, and general skin health. The response I received after releasing the products was overwhelmingly positive! In July of 2019, I decided to open a website to grow my customer base even more. On my one year anniversary of my website, I organically grossed over $10k in sales, have over 15 100% chemical and filler-free products, have customers in 23 states (and growing), and an international customer!

This journey has been full of hurdles, mistakes, but most of all growth!

Has it been a smooth road?
Has it been smooth? Running a business in 2020? During a pandemic? Hahaha, no it hasn’t been that bad! Before COVID19 happened, I experienced normal business issues like shipping delays, receiving the wrong equipment, and challenges with learning online marketing trends. Overall, I have been pretty blessed to have minimal issues with my business. I pride myself on quality above all, so I like to take my time and plan, which helps things go a lot smoother! With COVID19 posing delays from product vendors, hindering large in-person gatherings, and general uncertainty, I will admit I was stumped for a moment. In April, things cleared up, and business has continued to flow!

My biggest struggle? Overall, I would say, up until recently, finding branding that sticks.

On August 17th of this year, I re-launched and re-branded my entire business! So far, the response has been amazing! I believe adequate branding helps with the “sale” of the product, but again, up until recently, always been more focused on the product quality and efficacy. I am now focused on quality AND expansion! With this year going how it has, I am certainly ready for the challenge of any “bumps” that come my way!

My business is my passion, and I am thankful that it allows me to have an outlet to provide a healthy skincare alternative. Keeping my ingredients simple and my full ingredient list available for customers has been said to provide a “peace of mind” in knowing exactly what is going on their body. In regards to most proud of as a company owner is the fact that I have stayed committed to quality and never compromised the mission. Finally, Jane’s Roses is most known for results!
