Meet Kay Durairaj MD, FACS in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kay Durairaj.

Dr. Durairaj, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m an artist at heart, and I have always loved painting and sculpting. In college, I was torn between science and art. I decided to go into medicine because I have a passion for science, and because I love the human form. I ultimately realized that I could combine my love for science and art in practicing plastic surgery. Head and neck anatomy has always interested me the most and I have loved expressing my passion for beauty by helping people to enhance their best features. There is no better feeling than making someone glow with a newfound confidence and a beautiful new look. I think that maintaining facial attractiveness is the new normal for our generation and I am excited about all the technology we have to stay young!

Has it been a smooth road?
The most difficult thing about my journey has been reconciling my ambition as a surgeon with my desire to be a “normal human” – with a family life and interests outside of the operating room. I wanted to be able to pursue my interests as a writer and an artist, and still be a surgeon, wife and a mother. I am amazingly lucky this year to have grown a large Instagram following @BeautybyDrKay, that showcases my artistry, plastic surgery skills, and teachings about beauty! It is thrilling to be nationally recognized as one of the most innovative facial plastic surgeons in my specialty. I enjoy creating cutting edge techniques, lecturing and teaching both other surgeons and my patients.

I trained at UCLA for head and neck surgery, which consists of two years of general surgery and four years of head and neck surgery with a focus on facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. It is one of the top five institutions in the country, and it was difficult for me to figure out how to be successful in the surgical field as I nurtured my family life. However, I had amazing mentors in my specialty who showed me that it is possible to have children and also have successful careers. I also looked to my mother and my grandmother, who are amazing women physicians and mothers. My chief year of residency, the most rigorous year, I had twins! And then two more! This showed me that I can have both an active and fun family life, and success in my career — it showed me that I can do anything!

Today, I am chairman of my department, I am a mother to four wonderful children, and I have a growing Instagram following where I get to showcase my artistry, educate, and reach out to lot of amazing people.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the K. Kay Durairaj, MD, FACS story. Tell us more about the business.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The industry is definitely moving towards minimally invasive facial contouring, sculpting, and maintenance with no downtime and fast results. Injectable beauty is becoming a major industry! As it currently is, it will only grow. There is also a shift towards maintenance at a younger age! Many of my clients are young women in their twenties who are seeking to begin maintenance early! I love that this kind of maintenance of facial attractiveness is becoming a part of a regularly-scheduled wellness routine. I think maintaining and creating individuality with beauty is so important, and I support my patients’ desires to create the faces they want. In the next 5-10 years, maintenance of attractiveness and prevention of facial collagen breakdown and structural changes will be the new normal!
