Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Chen Mazzara.
Hi Katy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a money coach for creative, freedom seekers who want to make more, worry less and achieve true financial freedom, so they can live the life of their dreams. I focus on creative types because I was a freelance TV producer and digital development executive for 15 years, so I really understand what it’s like to be in feast or famine mode. When I turned 40, I wanted to be in business for myself, so I took an online business course, which helped me to discover that I’m really good with my money. While I had practical experience for myself on what worked and didn’t work for me, I knew I didn’t have the comprehensive knowledge to help clients just yet, so I decided to get a certification in personal financial planning through UC Berkeley. However, while the program was comprehensive, something was missing. Money is an emotional topic. It’s the #1 reason most couples fight and divorce over. So, I also went and got certified as a life coach and am now also certified as a Master Coach in trauma-informed modalities. I wanted to be able to support my clients on a deeper level because I’ve known three women in my life who stayed in abusive relationships because they didn’t have their own money. They had small children and didn’t work outside of the home. So now, my mission is to empower everyone to make decisions NOT based on money. Instead, I want you to make decisions based on your core values and your dream desires. Money, to me, is all about the freedom to choose.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, it’s been a smooth road. My mantra in life comes from The Alchemist — “When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” In my business, I’ve seen this over and over again. I’ll put something out there, and the universe/God brings it into my life, in a way, that’s even better than I had imagined it.
Now, this is not to say that I haven’t had to do the hard work or haven’t had challenges.
Some of my biggest challenges in my business had to do with hiring the right people to help me. I know I can’t do it alone, and yet, I’ve hired people for the wrong reasons.
I hired a friend one time, and that didn’t work out well. We had completely different expectations, and I learned I needed to communicate more clearly and lead. I find it harder with friends because I don’t want to hurt their feelings, and I sometimes want to talk through what I’m thinking but then they think that what I’m saying is how it should be. Such a big learning lesson. I now have a team, and none of them were friends of mine. I didn’t know them at all, and they’re amazingly talented at what they do and support me so much.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a financial wellness coach, a money mentor, a money mastery coach. All of those titles fit.
Most clients say that they’ve never heard of anyone talk about money in the way that I do.
I believe that money isn’t real, as someone may see it. Humans made up money, and the currency has such different values to different countries in the world. A U.S. dollar doesn’t equal the Canadian dollar or an Australian dollar. So, you and I get to define what money means to us.
To me, money represents freedom of choice. The reason I am a financial wellness coach is because (like I mentioned above) I’ve known three women in my life who stayed in abusive relationships because of the lack of money. They had small children to take care of, and they didn’t work outside of the home. So, now my mission is to empower you to make decisions NOT based on money.
Instead, I want you to make decisions based on your core values and what you actually desire.
Money is also an exchange of energy, so in order to make more money, you must shift your own energy.

What’s next?
In December, I’m launching the Financial Freedom for Creatives Club. It’s a way to work with me that’s very cost-effective. It gives you access to me each month. You also get trainings on both spiritual and practical money concepts so that you get clarity, knowledge and a shift in your relationship with money. I’m also potentially working on something exciting with a Fintech company that I can’t talk about yet.
