Meet Katrina Williams of The Naked Truth in Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Williams.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
A bit about me. I moved out of my parent’s house when I was 17 years old and decided to go to college out of state. At the time I was a competitive cheerleader, we managed to win a World Championship as well as 2x National Championships. After a few years of struggling to work to pay for school and participating in athletics, I moved back to Detroit. I finished school studying Media Arts and shortly following was given the opportunity to work for the Detroit Pistons in-game entertainment. I did that for a season and was offered a job, at the same time an opportunity to coach cheerleading in Australia for six months came about. I made a life-changing decision to follow my passion and traveled up the coast of Australia and New Zealand for a year working with athletes of all ages. I tried to move to Australia permanently and was denied a Visa. Upon returning to Detroit, I knew I had to get out. I booked a one-way ticket to Los Angeles and landed a job working in the music industry as a personal assistant for a major A&R and Manager. After working in the music industry for almost two years, I decided to take a step back and focus on myself and my passions. I am currently in school full time taking courses in creative writing as well as media arts. My hustles include modeling, blogging, web design, brand development/marketing, and networking!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This journey has been far from smooth. Financially I have been on my own since the age of 17. While staying overseas, my contract had ended with a cheer program. I could have flown home after six months and call it quits however, I decided to stay. That decision left me hungry and homeless for a bit, struggling to find work without the proper paperwork. The beach was very cozy I will say. I started going to the public library and using their computers to send out email marketing campaigns for business consulting and marketing as well as cheerleading camps and choreography. I managed to get back and my feet and the experiences were worth all of the struggles. After moving to LA, working in the music industry was very difficult. As a female in her mid-20s, I was often fighting men who had awful intentions. There was a specific incident with a well-known producer that I was asked to work. He took advantage of a situation and I endured physical and mental abuse that no female should have to experience. It has been a journey since then, rediscovering who I am and finding that strength I had thought I lost. In the end, I couldn’t let one man define who I am. I feel stronger now more than ever.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Naked Truth story. Tell us more about the business.
I technically have not started my own company. I currently work freelance with small companies, building websites, setting up photoshoots, and rebranding their image and social media. Every business and individual has a story to tell and it’s my passion to help them tell their story. Aside from branding, I am in the process of starting a blog “The Naked Truth”. This blog is an honest space where I tell my stories in hopes that someone out there can relate and find inspiration within themselves. I don’t want anyone feeling like they are alone in this world. I also use this space to educate the community on hot topics, social issues, injustice and what we can do about it. The best part of the blog is the open submissions where anyone can sign up and submit their work to become a writer. There is also a forum where people can post questions and we can have honest discussions on endless topics. This is my passion project and I can’t wait for it to take off!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. Everything happens for a reason and every decision we make takes us on a path. The people we meet, the opportunities that arise, and the journey are not simply by chance. The universe doesn’t always give you what you want, it always gives you what you need.
