Meet Katlin Nordland of Weddings By Katlin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katlin Nordland.

Katlin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up, I always had difficulty figuring out who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do with my life. I struggled with deciding what I wanted to do with my future because my interests were vast. When I graduated High School and headed for college, I made the decision to take strictly General Education classes hoping that something would click and I would suddenly have an epiphany and have it all figured out. One semester in, then another, and I had no idea what I wanted to do, however, it was without a doubt that I was drawn to helping people. As I struggled with finding my path, I spent much of my free time flipping through channels and frequently catching myself glued to TLC show’s such as “Four Weddings” and “Say Yes to the Dress”. The more I viewed these programs, the more I fell in love with “love”. A fire was ignited within me and my passion became abundantly clear. Love. That thing that makes the world go ‘round, that thing that brings people together, I wanted a part of it. The skies of my mind opened to expose a bright blue, cloudless horizon with a luminous sun beaming at my future.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As much as I would like for this process to read like a fairytale, it has not been all unicorns and rainbows. Starting my business hasn’t been the smoothest of roads. I believe that all new business owners begin their venture with great expectations (as we should be) but there has been a point in all of our careers that we were humbled, frustrated and thought, even for a fleeting moment, about throwing in the towel. It isn’t until you’re fully invested in yourself that you realize “Hey this stuff is hard work!” I launched my business because I was confident that I was well-rounded in the event industry. My initial thought was that it couldn’t be THAT hard or THAT expensive to start a business because, after all, I’m only offering a service. How difficult could this be? Little did I know how important, and costly, advertising is, or how time consuming (and fuel consuming) driving to meet new vendors as well as making time to explore new venues, or countless hours spent doing research on the computer would be. The expenses, however daunting, were not the true struggle; It’s the amount of time that you must put into your work. It’s being told “No” repeatedly and learning to understand that each “No” gets you closer to a “Yes”. It’s being able to look at every single wedding or event that I do and say, “I should have done X instead of Z” and “I need to do _____ better next time”. The struggles I have faced being a business owner lie within myself. I have been my biggest obstacle, but I hold the sincere belief that I have grown stronger as a business owner and person for recognizing that.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is waking up every morning, and being excited to get to work. It’s that little bolt of electricity that makes you tingle with excitement inside. It’s being able to live your life looking back and being proud. Being successful isn’t about the amount of money you bring in, it is about being able to smile about what you do, through the good times and bad, and continue to carry on. I felt successful when I did 5 weddings in a year, and I feel successful now doing over 100. I feel that one thing that attributes to my success is showing my clients is how personable I am as well as my attention to the details of their words. Planning a wedding, in sync, is quite a task and I feel that, as a coordinator, it is my job to make my clients dreams come true. I feel that is it so incredibly important to feel not only like a wedding planner to your couples, but also a friend. I want my brides to feel comfortable around me and comfortable knowing that I will take care of every little detail. We strive for excellence. It is my job to let our couples know that everything, from making sure tables are set to helping my bride touch up her lipstick before she says “I do”, will be taken care of.
