Meet Kathy Huynh of Kathy Huynh Artistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Huynh.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started Kathy Huynh Artistry in 2013 as a side job while working full time as a personal banker. I became a freelance makeup artist with the intention of getting more in touch with my creative and artistic side that I had been missing for years. Growing up I was very fond of art and spent most of my free time drawing and painting. Through my time in elementary, I competed in many art shows and won numerous awards. However, as I got older, my passion for art began to wane off. Maybe it was because my parents convinced me that art is not a real career, it can only be a hobby.

Shortly after my senior year in high school, I started my first real job and career at a bank. When I first started out, I thought it was just a temporary job for me while I went to college. However, I quickly fell in love with building relationships with customers and making a difference in their financial lives. Fast forward to 11 years later, I am still working full time in the banking industry. During the decade of being in the business world, I felt a little disconnected with who I am and my creative passion. I set out to find that missing piece within me and realized being a makeup artist would give me joy and freedom to create… with real life canvas.

After attending a makeup academy and became a certified makeup artist, I decided to focus on doing makeup for weddings and brides. What drove me into the wedding industry and the love I have for working with everyday women instead of models.

There’s something extremely unique and special to know that someone is trusting you to make them look and feel beautiful on the biggest day of their life. It is a daunting task, but one that I love doing.

When I first started, I was struggling with getting clients and building my brand. I did a lot of free jobs in exchange for images for my portfolio. For others around me it seemed silly to waste time working for free, but for me, it was the best thing I did for my business. Each time I was asked to do a free job, I was ecstatic. Why? Because it was an opportunity for me to practice my skills but more importantly, an opportunity for me to create connections and build trust with those I worked with. The time and work I had put into networking with other professionals, paid me back tenfold years later.

Today, I have a growing business with my own team of makeup artists and hairstylists that help me on large wedding projects. Thanks to the relationships I’ve built with others in the industry, I quickly became the preferred makeup/hair vendor for many photographers. I knew that if I wanted to go far in this industry, I needed to build a team instead of going solo. Kathy Huynh Artistry is now a full service mobile makeup & hair company for bridal events. We have built our reputation on the quality of work, reasonable prices and the personalized services we provide to each of our clients.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, but it is in the challenges that make my accomplishments feel that much more rewarding. I struggled with getting full support from those around me and how to market myself. I had to figure it all out by myself. During the first year and a half, it was an emotional roller coaster. I became frustrated because I wasn’t getting the results that other artists on social media were getting. I felt that I could never be as good or have my many clients. It is also challenging in putting yourself and your work out there for others to judge. And sometimes their opinions can make you feel like a failure.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kathy Huynh Artistry – what should we know?
Kathy Huynh Artistry is a mobile makeup & hair services company, specializing in bridal events. We are based out of Orange County but we serve LA and nearby counties. I am the founder and key makeup artist in the company. I am most proud of the team that I have created. When I first started, I was a one woman show. Now, I have teamed up with talented hairstylists and makeup artists to help me on large wedding parties. It makes me proud that these individuals trust in my skills and leadership to come work with me. It also makes me proud that I can create job opportunities for them because some of them freelance full time. The one thing that set us apart from our competitors is our commitment to creating quality work and 100% client satisfaction guarantee. We are known for being kind, professional, flexible and fun!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My lead hairstylist and partner, Amy Tsai plays an important role in the success of my business. She is a talented hairstylist that I met on a job few years ago. Since I am not skilled in hairstyling, so Amy has been my go to girl for all bridal hairdos. Because of her amazing work, we have had multiple referrals from past brides! Together she and I make a dynamic duo. We complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
