Meet Kathy Avila of Purpose LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Avila.

Kathy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m originally from Colombia but grew up in the East Coast. Two years ago, I was forced to leave my hometown, Bethlehem Pennsylvania, after losing everything I had including my salon of four years. For 15 years, I worked very hard to be where I was. I became one of the biggest influences in my town, where I owned one of the most prestige high-end salons. I also worked for television, beauty pageants, and some of the best magazines in the area.

Unfortunately, some bad choices led me to move to Los Angeles to start over. Shortly after arriving, I found two part-time jobs, one in a blow-dry bar and one at a barbershop in West Hollywood. I had no place to live at the moment and no time to look, so I spent a few months sleeping on a couch. Every night all I could really think about was writing. My two passions became my life, barber in the day and writer at night.

Finally, after a year of working 84 hours a week, I was hired at one of the most well-known barbershops in Beverly Hills. My passion for the barber industry inspired me to create a beautiful movement that I named Sunday Cuts. Sunday Cuts is a way to give back to our homeless community. We offer free Haircuts at Venice Beach once a month, and on occasions, we offer water, food and free clothing.

It has now been two years since I moved here and after many sleepless nights and many sacrifices, I cannot say that I am where I want to be. But I am grateful that God gave me another opportunity and this time its called Purpose LA, an amazing barbershop in Beverly Hills. He’s also given me the opportunity of writing two books, “Behind Hollywood” and a kids book “The Adventures of Arthur the Doodle” while currently working on my third.

I feel very proud of all that I’ve accomplished and understand that sometimes the struggle is real but so am I.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Its been everything but a smooth road, losing everything was just the beginning. The real struggle for me was coming to the other side of the Country, where no one knows me, starting over with nothing but five boxes. The reality of Los Angeles can be overwhelming to a lot, but for me failing wasn’t and isn’t an option. I know every day my faith will be tested.

Another big struggle is also learning again how to follow and work with people that have different views, that manage and handle business differently then you, I’ve had to learn how to become an employee again. These things make my road to success more challenging every day. But I have made the choice to keep going no matter how difficult it may become. My faith will lead me.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Purpose LA – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Purpose LA is a men’s grooming studio. We specialize in making men feel great. I can’t tell you one thing that we do here that is not done with passion and attention to each detail. From haircuts to facials we make sure that all is done with the best care and products.

As a business owner, I’m so proud to be able to bring to life this concept. I know there are many places, especially in LA, that offer men’s grooming but we don’t just offer that. We offer a personal experience. Because our clients are all so unique, each client gets a personalized visit depending on their personal needs. I know that our clients work very hard so giving them more then just a rushed cut is what I want Purpose to focus on.

From the moment they walk through the door everything will be catered for them. From the music, the privacy, the atmosphere, top-shelf cocktails, shampoo, steam towel and of course the best haircut with style of their choice. This and more makes Purpose LA the gentleman’s number one choice.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m planning on expanding and eventually open other locations, I want to find new talent, young barbers with passion to create for the future what no other barber ever has.

Train them and shape them into barbers with a purpose. I want to put Purpose LA on top of the charts. Quality is what I’m looking for, quantity will follow. And of course, as a writer, I would love to touch peoples lives and be an inspiration to others.

I plan on becoming the best blogger for a men’s magazine. Maybe one day, have my own blog or magazine? That would be amazing. I’m branding myself and pouring my passion into my craft. That will be my legacy, I have faith that ill get there one day.

So if everything goes as plan I will love to open a non profit organization that  allows me to open more shelters and some how help alleviate the large population of homeless in Los Angeles
