Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathleen Van Dusen.
Kathleen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My business, Blume Holistic Skin Care, is really the latest evolution of my journey. Since receiving my Cosmetology license in 1984, I have worked in hair and makeup for the industry and various skin care lines. I started my first skin care business using Aveda products, my first foray into a more organic, natural approach. Not long after I was up and running, I became pregnant with twins.
In my naivete, I thought I would return to my clients after four months or so. This, needless to say, did not happen! A full six years went by before I ventured back into the business part of life. During the years, I stayed home (for the most part) with my babies, I really delved into organic, chemical free products. I was concerned about what I was using on their bodies knowing it was all absorbed through the skin.
This led me to Weleda baby products which, in turn, led me to Dr. Hauschka Holistic Skin Care. When I was ready to recreate my business, I decided to train with and use Dr. Hauschka in my new skin care business. I loved, and still do, the philosophy, integrity, and depth of the company. I love the fact that the products are based on ancient healing remedies that allow for a pure and genuine experience.
Perhaps one of the things I love the most is the function of rhythm featured within every treatment by way of the lymphatic stimulation. As a dancer and yogi, the concept of rhythm really speaks to me. Bringing this concept into my treatments changed things greatly for me and how I was approaching beauty in general.
Just last year, I ventured away from the umbrella of another spa and headed out on my own. I created my studio space, changed my name and re-branded myself. Blume Holistic Skin Care is what I have grown to be, and I couldn’t be happier…
Rhythm is the theme throughout all I do. Using Shakti Reiki, Chakra Alignment, lymph Stimulation within my skin care treatments and teaching dance and yoga, I invite your rhythm back to you. There is a deep relaxation and revitalizing of spirit that comes from these experiences.
My passion is to re-invite women to find themselves. Re-introduce themselves to themselves in their mid-season and find their own unique rhythm. I love the process of connecting the mind, body, spirit for women. To find their center, their shakti, their place of power, heal reawakened traumas and not become invisible.
I love that, through my own life’s journey that has included crisis and trauma, experiences and false starts, healing, and profound growth, I have gained the wisdom and trust of my own voice that I can now carry over to my clients as a form of understanding, compassion, and ability to help guide and transform each of my clients.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, no. I began my business venture when I was managing life with my young twins. It was crazy really, to think I could really dedicate the necessary time and energy into creating a successful business while juggling home life. I was happy to simply have it and keep it somewhat afloat. As the kids grew and I had a bit more time, I found myself struggling with being a solopreneur and not really knowing how or where to find help and support.
My life went into a personal tailspin about five years ago which brought much grief, heartache, and loss. My focus was very scattered, to say the least. After taking the time to process my way through that period, I truly came back more inspired and energized. It is the reason I made all the changes I did with renaming my business, relocating and rebranding. I now feel fresh and new but with wisdom and lessons learned that I can now parlay into my work.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My mission statement is: I intend to give my clients a state of grace, a journey within, a place of slow beauty and a connection of mind, body, spirit.
I feel this really embodies my passion and mission. My skin care treatments are really about the whole body, whole person. I come from a place of integrity and align myself with companies that hold the same values. I am not interested in the quick fix or beauty solutions that are shallow and surface only. I do not use machinery, harsh techniques, potentially damaging products or procedures.
My appointments are designed with enough time to give generously and intentionally to each client. I use energy work to help and guide my clients through underlying issues and buried emotions that often surface within the treatments. I do lymphatic stimulation within each treatment as well which provides detoxing and a very deep relaxation. I believe this is a very important piece to claiming the true beauty inherent in all of us.
I use my dance and yoga education and experience too, to encourage and facilitate women on a journey to reclaim their body and find empowerment. My demographic tends towards the ” mid-season” woman. We are women reemerging and finding our way back to our true selves and essence.
I am most proud of the depth and integrity of my business. The beauty industry is not known for its integrity and diligence around that. I hold my own integrity in high regard. I am proud too that I am able to offer time, space and energy towards releasing limiting beliefs and encouraging empowerment.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think our city is a fantastic place for businesses like mine! We are an energetic, attuned, excited and aware city. And, full of women (and men!) who are all in various stages of growth and emergence into the world.
As well as, our city is intense and action packed with a lot of movers and shakers and influencers all who are in need of a respite, deep relaxation, intentional and high-quality skincare/facials, grounding and a quiet place to reconnect.
Our city is a great place to start out — a city filled with people of every kind. It also provides smaller nooks and crannies type of cities/locations that can feel less intimidating and still access the masses — great potential for growth although very expensive.
You have to be creative and able to think outside the box to find your niche. Our biggest issue is commuting and getting to where we need to be, when. But, people will come to you if you are providing a much-needed service and/or space.
