Meet Kathleen Martinez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathleen Martinez.

Kathleen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started at the age of 15. I was scouted one day when I was out with my mother shopping. A woman approached us and asked my mother if she had ever considered me to start modeling, I looked at my mother and laughed. I kindly told her I’m not model material. She smiled and looked at me and my mother and said that “I was mistaken” and gave my mother her card. We went home and stared at the card for a while and we eventually started to consider it. One day we called and started setting up interviews. I was eventually casted for different fashion shows and even became an extra in some HBO shows. A little way down the road I became pregnant and I decided to put the modeling life behind me to focus on raising my son.

One day I told my family and friends that I wanted to start modeling again. I received mixed answers, but the ones that lingered more were the ones that said: “ you’re a mother now, you can’t be a model !” I took that and couldn’t let it go. A couple of years passed and I revisited my thought of pursuing my modeling career. My husband now has been my greatest support system along with my son and best friend.

They have been helping me with my self-esteem and helping me believe In myself. I can’t say it was easy to get back into the field, but what I can say is I’m so happy I decided to come back! I’ve been experiencing so many amazing opportunities and they have been opening many doors for me!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been an easy road. As many must know you need to be very thick-skinned in this industry. You will hear more No than yes when starting or even being in the game for a while. Your look might not be for many companies/designers.

But your look will also be exactly what many other companies/designers are looking for. It’s all on you how much time and effort you are willing to put in. Having a family and a young son does make my time a little tighter but I wouldn’t change my life! The struggle is just as exciting as the job!

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was kind of an introvert. Kinda shy and anti-social. Not very confident. I was always in my room watching Disney movies and wishing I could look like a Disney princess one day!
