Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathleen Bowen.
Kathleen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started professionally cooking when I was 16, the same year I had my daughter, for my oldest brother Todd at the local farmer’s markets. I ended up going back to school and hustling in and out of California to make sure I could provide for my daughter as I was a single parent and on my own.
I have been catering and providing private chef experiences throughout the years as well. Four years ago on Christmas eve, we lost my little brother EZ $, a 21-year-old UCLA student, from a motorcycle accident. One of his favorite things of mine that I made was bbq ribs with my homemade sauces. I really wanted to find a way to share with the world something that meant so much to our family. Three summers ago there was a meet and greet in Suisun City at G Stacks Custom Smokers shop and I knew there would be so many reputable folks in the BBQ world that I really needed to be there. I took the six-hour drive up with two bottles of sauce to see if what I had created was really as good as my family and I thought it was and by the time I reach the freeway headed home they had licked the mason jars clean! so I bottled up a few of our flavors and decided to sell them online. www.bonecleanerbbqsauce.bigcartel.com I have also created recipes for other companies and caterers including Warren G’s Bbq Catering company that’s based in SoCal as well.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
By the grace of God, the road I have traveled so far has been what it is. Financing or losing a batch of sauce here and there cause of a misstep is something to be expected. The hardest thing that I knew would be the issue, at least in my eyes, is that I’m just “some girl” from California and what do I know about bbq. Besides the fact that its something I have studied and practiced and that I’m a perfectionist (the Virgo in me), there is also a bloodline in me that allows me to create the recipes I do. I have a way with spices that is hard to explain. Creating a team is the biggest challenge. Consistency, dependability and positive vibes are mandatory. Remembering you can’t trust everybody is another thing.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bone Cleaner Bbq Sauce – what should we know?
Bone Cleaner Bbq Sauce is a specialty bbq and hot sauce company. We have six bbq sauce flavors Original, Spicy Hickory, Mango Madness, Pineapple Paris, Sweet Peach and Peach Habanero. The last four flavors on the list are made with real fruit and they are all gluten-free. We are still in the beginning stages but will have our Spicy Hickory flavory available in the stores, like Bristol Farms hopefully in the next 90 days. until then we are available online. Our pride comes from giving back. throughout the year, once a month, my pitmaster buddy Shawn (@aquietcook) and I go to downtown LA and feed about 250-300 people and pass out toiletries or clothing depending on what we have come up with. November we ended up having the largest amount of supplies to date given away. 310 plates, 280 toiletries, over 100 shirts and jackets, 63 pairs of shoes, and over 300 1 liter bottles of water. This is what warms my heart and motivates me to keep pushing my business.
For Bone Cleaner Bbq Sauce, our biggest moments were probably seeing all of the celebrities that have torn up our sauce over a freshly smoked piece of meat. legends like Mike Tyson, a couple of my favorite comedians Lunell and Cedric the Entertainer, Snoop Dogg’s private chef Big Q Bone, absolutely great guy, loves our sauces and takes them on the road.
Our flavor is definitely what sets us apart. The ingredients/spices that I use aren’t typically found in the bbq world. I have tried hundreds of sauces, blended them, mixed them and nothing comes close to what we make. We haven’t even hit the store yet and there are Bay Area competition teams that are winning 1st place, and not just once on a whim. It’s very exciting to see, especially when we are against some very well known and highly supported brands.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My parents Leila and Roy have been my biggest cheerleaders and support system, especially when I feel defeated, but honestly, if it wasn’t for Garnet Geoffroy of Gstacks Custom Smokers I would not have been in the company of Warren G for him to even try my flavors and hire me on to help him create his own line. Not to mention G Stacks also has his own “G Stack Edition Trini Hot Pepper Sauce” that I created and produce for him as well. I also have a really good friend George that’s been absolutely amazing with all of my labels, business cards, stickers, banners and just about anything else that has to do with designs and printing.
