Meet Katherine Nguyen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Nguyen.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Katherine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a kid and like many others, I’ve always wanted to be an artist from watching anime and Saturday morning cartoons. I remember I would constantly draw anime in class and get in trouble for it – but I still did it anyway. Art was also a great escape for me and a tool to release my anger, so I drew constantly (haha).

I went to San Jose State University for Animation/Illustration and then quit and then came back to school (and worked my ungrateful ass off) to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Then I went to Dreamworks TV after graduation as a production assistant. I freelanced for several studios as a Storyboard Artist. And finally, I got my first in-house gig at Toei Animation as a Story Revisionist. I got to where I am today through hard work and through the love and support I received from many.

Hard work and a support system are definitely some of the most important ingredients for success. You had both, so has it been a smooth road for you so far?
Aw, hell naw. It was not an easy journey. haha I went through a lot while pursuing my dream as a Story Artist. I remember I used to get into a lot of fights, be in a gang, be homeless for a bit, be poor, etc. Coming from immigrant parents, we had to face extra emotional baggage too. But when I started school at SJSU, I started to attain a lot of discipline and support – something I never thought I would have gained in my life.

Most of all, I gained a lot of perspective about my life and about myself and who I wanted to be. I am blessed to have my family, and many friends and peers from the Animation Industry who helped me get to where I needed to be: Here in LA, being a Story Artist. I’m determined to share my stories through my art and hope to inspire others to do the same.

We’d love to hear more about your art.
I’m a local Story Artist in LA. I like to create stories, board or revise board panels for shows/film. I specialize in storytelling. I’m not sure what I’m known for? I might be known as the girl who likes to do figure drawing a lot and one of the girls who does comics while binge-watching all of the Harry Potter series. To be honest, I don’t know what I’m most proud of. I always feel like I need to improve. I guess what sets me apart from others is the stories I have yet to tell.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best: The food. The people. There are so many fun events here in LA.

What I like least: The traffic. How expensive everything is.
