Meet Katherine Lesh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Lesh.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Katherine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My father, Tom Shepherd, has been an organic farmer in Santa Barbara County before ‘Organic’ was even a thing. I was raised on a farm, tending his farmer’s markets, and learning about the business. In 2012, my boyfriend at the time and I inherited my parents old vintage wagon where we opened a farm shop in downtown Carpinteria. We continued on with his CSA program and turn it into a multi farm CSA, which is now the bulk of our business. We deliver our farm boxes to homes, schools, businesses, coffee shops and more. Every single thing you’ll find in the box is 100% certified organic, locally grown, and extremely fresh. We provide recipes with each box, connect you with the farmers who grew it and share stories of people that inspire us in the kitchen. Our produce stand is still operating 4-6 days a week (depending on the season) and we are excited to open our first restaurant this fall!

Has it been a smooth road?
No ha. This business has not been a smooth road. I started this business at age 21. I had no college degree, and I wouldn’t even say I was an ok student while in high school. All I knew was how to work hard, finish jobs, and I had a vision. Everyone thinks they have one of the hardest businesses. But ours really is tough. The product we’re selling has a shelf life of 1-2 days so keeping things fresh, and not going to waste is extremely tough. We’re up against Mother Nature and although we plan what will be in our farm boxes for the next week, crops freeze in the winter and things will suddenly not be available. We’ve found growth to be extremely difficult also. There’s a sweet spot in every business for sure. Once you hit it, STAY THERE and ENJOY IT!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Farm Cart Organics story.
Farm Cart Organics is a completely transparent organic farm box company. We source from 100% certified organic farmers. I’m personally the proudest of helping get over five farms certified organic. It’s not easy, but we’re making a difference in the ag industry and I believe that’s what sets us apart from our competition. We have extremely tight relationships with farmers and we tell THEIR story.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We’re hoping to carry our beliefs, story, relationship with farmers into a restaurant brand. We’re opening our first restaurant this fall and couldn’t be more excited. I also see our farm boxes growing even more and we can’t wait for the day we can bring them to LA! It’s always been a dream of ours.
