Today we’d like to introduce you to Katherine Gutierrez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Katherine. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a child, I was always very creative. Drawing, coloring, painting, rearranging my room, and planning parties with my dolls were my hobbies. Any piece of art I would create I would submit to any competition of which some were even featured in calendars. Who knew that my passion for art and planning at a young age would lead me to where I am today.
It was back in 2006 when I discovered my passion for helping others bring their vision to life through event planning and design. I was working for a small independent magazine in Chicago. My role was to see sell and design ads for clients, who in turn, gave me opportunities to help plan their events, fashion shows, grand openings, etc.
Shortly after, I started working as an event planner at Oliveaire Artisan & Events. During my 9 years there, I loved every minute of it and learned so much! My love for event planning and designing was so deep that I found myself planning all types of parties for friend, family, and colleagues on top of this job and juggling my “corporate 9-5 job.”
The time had come to say goodbye to my hometown, Chicago and pursue my dream in Los Angeles. I had a few jobs since I moved (mostly event planning roles), but couldn’t find the right fit – something was missing and I couldn’t grasp it. But then I was offered a job opportunity to be part of a sales team, and most importantly, is where I met my business partner, Marixa. While we were colleagues at work, we had also built a strong friendship. She too had always dreamt of owning her own event planning company.
Marixa exudes positivity, warmth, and passion. I knew she would be a great business partner. A few months later, we brought on our Director of Marketing, Jonathan. He is the mastermind behind all our marketing and technical aspects of our events. And just like that, Lavishly Yours Events was born!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
To be honest, I think it has fairly been a smooth ride so far. We have our normal struggles as a new business – winning new clients, separating ourselves from the competition – but our passion for Lavishly Yours Events is what drives us and our success. Marixa, Jonathan, and I have such a great dynamic and dedication to treat each event as if it were our own.
In the beginning, however, I feel like the biggest bump in the road was me. I had such a solid foundation in Chicago, but I was constantly struggling with the question “Am I good enough here in Los Angeles?” While I had 10 years of experience and full confidence in my LYE team, I was scared to take such a huge risk and had every excuse in the book to keep putting this dream on the back burner. I had a great 9-5 job and was doing event planning on the side. Why change that? One day, I told myself to “wake up,” and had this new outlook on life, and realized the impact our team could make on others’ lives. Everything was about focusing on being the best person that I could be for our team, surrounding myself with positive energy, and most importantly, believing in myself. I never looked back and here we are.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Lavishly Yours Events story. Tell us more about the business.
Lavishly Yours Events is a full-service design, production, and planning company that has mastered the talents of planning, conceptualizing, and executing flawless events. We focus on crafting the most uniquely “You” events by spending the time to get to know each of our clients. We call ourselves visionaries and pride ourselves on bringing peoples thoughts and more to life. From simple day of coordination to full planning, we will be there every step of the way as much as you need us to be. LYE takes all the stress and worries out of your hands so you can enjoy every moment of the special event.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t know if I necessarily believe in the dictionary definition of “luck.” To me, luck is an outcome of all the hard work that I’ve put into my life. This also means trusting myself and being open to opportunities that may or may not be within my comfort zone. The more I dedicate myself to my work with consistency, focus, and passion, the more “luck” I receive.
I always try to maintain a positive outlook on things so “bad luck” isn’t in my vocabulary. If something negative happens, I try to focus on the learning. What is the take away from that particular situation? How can I make things better moving forward? I like to say I’ve had great “luck” so far.
