Meet Kateryna Bilyk of Colorflow Creative in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kateryna Bilyk.

Kateryna, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I always knew I’d be an entrepreneur – at some point, somehow, it would happen.

Since graduating college in 2013, I worked in tech. I started out as a (junior) UI Designer & 2D Artist at Playfirst (now Glu Mobile) in San Francisco and over the course of 10 years contributed to and lead creative teams at both – the startup and corporate levels. I’ve designed mobile and web experiences across multiple platforms and industry sectors including luxury services, hospitality, E-Commerce, energy and mobile games – most recently prior to leaving the corporate world, I was Design Lead at Hilton Worldwide, responsible for guiding the design direction of the Hilton Honors mobile app catering to upwards of 100M users worldwide.

In May of 2018, I was feeling particularly restless and knew it was time to test the waters on my own. An interesting opportunity to try my hand at a product-based e-commerce business came along and before I knew it, through plenty of fear and doubt, I was suddenly the Co-Founder of a surf-style pet brand, clocking 16 hour days and learning everything from product photography to photoshoot planning to E-Commerce design and development to manufacturing and the list goes on. It was new exciting and terrifying at the same time but I’ve always been the type of person that needs to be constantly learning and exploring to feel engaged and settled.

My 1.5 years as Co-Founder of an E-Commerce (and retail) brand were extremely transformative as far as stepping into a true entrepreneur mindset goes. You realize that having a secure mid-six-figure corporate job and a side hustle is NOT the same as having to bring your A-game every single day because your livelihood depends on it. That was a major shift that happened for me and laid the foundation that absolutely NEEDED to be there for Colorflow Creative to be born two years later.

Ultimately, I realized that all the podcasts I listened to that preached being 110% passionate about your business if you want to succeed were true. Co-founding a dog products company aligned with the surf lifestyle was a transformative experience and taught me a lot BUT I don’t have a dog and don’t surf so feeling connected to the business was a struggle. One day I woke up and knew that wasn’t my path.

The difference this time around was that the fear of trying something else (something new again) was muted and less intimidating because I was more confident in my capabilities this time around, not having set foot in a corporate office for over a year.

Deciding to create a Digital Design Studio wasn’t an overnight revelation. In the months prior, each time I thought about what that would mean and how it might take shape, it just felt more and more right. Digital design is what I know best; it’s what I do best and where my connections are. My vision for Colorflow Creative was superior quality – inside and out – something I’m ecstatic to be able to deliver on for our clients today.

It’s also very interesting how I began conceptualizing Colorflow about six months before COVID-19 shut everything down…if that’s not the universe guiding me, I don’t know what is. I launched Colorflow Creative only about four months ago and since then we have partnered with a rockstar offshore web development team as well as an LA-local app development team increasing our studio’s capabilities tenfold. We’re currently working on several projects the larger of which are web apps with FinTech and AR components.

I’ve brought an exceptionally talented User Experience (UX) lead on board who helps our clients transform business requirements into functional web and app interfaces design to align with their business goals, user base and scale with their business. I’ve also on-boarded a Digital Product Innovation specialist who helps our clients uncover the full potential of their technology, ideas and overall digital product vision.

Colorflow has grown exponentially in a very short amount of time and the only thing I can credit this growth to is that this time around, I’m 110% passionate about my business, my clients and the product my team delivers successfully time and time again.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Since Colorflow’s inception, the road has been smooth-ish. Nothing is ever TOTALLY smooth and easy but having a career foundation upon which Colorflow was built has made the journey easier. In business, connections are everything; networking is everything and I was lucky to have built a strong network through my ten years in corporate.

A major struggle in the VERY beginning was trying to figure out the offer. We could technically offer so many services and do so many things…but trying to offer everything under the sun quickly became messy and led to work I didn’t really WANT to do because it didn’t feel aligned with what I knew Colorflow could excel at. It’s still a work in progress of course but through painstaking brainstorming, hours of journaling, pros and cons lists and a few business books, I realized the answer (or at least the jumping-off point) was simple…

What could we be best in class at? Apps. We can design, develop and deliver superior quality apps (inside and out). Website design is a close second for us and so we simplified our offer from what it was in the beginning (SEO / Social / Print, etc.) to just app design and development and web design and development. It just made a lot more sense to laser focus on what I knew our studio could do BEST.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
At Colorflow, years of industry connections along with thoroughly vetted strategic partners form a design and development ecosystem ready for projects of any complexity.

Our teams handle enterprise-level projects as expertly as simple landing pages and our focus on process ensures a smooth and simple to navigate project management experience from kickoff through handoff.

Our primary focus is mobile app design and development (iOS and Android) and our secondary focus is website design and development.

We’re very new so we’re not exactly widely known (yet) BUT those who do know us know that we deliver an unparalleled quality digital product at the end of each project. I’m extremely proud of the quality our team is able to achieve. Every detail is accounted for; every technical and design decision makes sense and is aligned with our clients’ greater vision for their own clients and their business. We don’t “just make things pretty” – we thoroughly audit each client’s industry landscape, competitor base and existing digital product(s) if they exist before laying a strong strategic foundation upon which their project is built. And THEN we make it pretty… Really f’n pretty! 🙂

During my time in corporate, I loved working within teams with a sense of humor. Teams that executed at a high level but also could have fun while doing it. I’m so excited to be shaping THAT kind of a team at Colorflow today. In fact, some of the people I’ve recruited were colleagues in the past. I want our clients to enjoy working with us every step of the way. I like to say that we’re very serious about our craft, but we don’t take OURSELVES too seriously… so – go ahead, send us squirrel memes. 🙂

What were you like growing up?
I was a very strong-willed, never-sit-still ball of energy growing up. I would never throw tantrums when I wanted something, I would just persistently and calmly ask for it over and over again until I got whatever that was – a quality that’s served me EXTREMELY well in my adult life too by the way.

I was very active, inquisitive and adventurous. I loved books too (still do). I grew up in Kiev, Ukraine with a lot of freedom and autonomy pretty early on, so we were always out climbing things and otherwise getting into trouble from morning to night when we’d finally get called back home. I loved catching and inspecting bugs and have definitely brought home more than one stray kitten for my family to figure out what to do with.

Drawing was always an escape for me and a talent my mom recognized and began developing within me very early on. I spent many summers in private art classes that I hated at the time because they cut into my friend’s time but am grateful for today.

Oh…and I was a VERY difficult teenager (sorry mom!) – but that’s a story for another time… 😉
