Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Clancey.
Kate, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my business almost 27 years ago when my oldest son was born and designed his birth announcement. My friends started asking me to do their birth announcement and children’s birthday parties and a business was born. I had a studio in my home for 23 years so that I could raise my three sons and opened my shop 4 years ago.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been smooth but long hours when you are wearing so many hats it can get overwhelming and learning to distribute some of the jobs to other people. I was working two jobs for 8 years of my business supporting my boys through college and this year is the first year that I am working full time in my business and am focusing on my social media and marketing to grow my clientele.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
In my business, I make almost anything with paper; i.e. wedding invitations, baby showers birthday parties, escort cards, custom maps, signage, party favors etc. I specialize in custom invitation; a majority of my clients are brides so I will take them starting from their Save the Dates to their thank you cards after their wedding or event. My customer service is what sets me apart, I get to know my clients and they end up coming back for birth announcements and parties which is fun for me to see. What I am most proud of is a client that was getting married in Italy and wanted a wedding invitation and he couldn’t find anyone in LA County to make it and I said I would try. The invitation was in a tube wrapped with fabric, them hand painted with twine and a wax seal. We designed a beautiful logo, custom map, hand calligraphy, I was really proud of this invitation.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up with three brothers so I was for sure a tomboy and was always involved in sports. People would probably say I was stubborn but would try anything with my friends, jump off a cliff into a river…sure. I was outdoors a lot; my parents have a ranch in Carmel Valley so I did a lot of horseback riding and played tennis and swimming in high school. I was an avid reader growing up.
