Meet Kasey Kilmer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kasey Kilmer.

Kasey, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My career in fitness began in Los Angeles while pursuing acting and writing, in the entertainment industry, in 2001. I began a steady yoga practice and slowly began falling in love with the philosophy, movement, and peace of mind that it brought to my life. While auditioning, I came upon an opportunity to participate in an ab infomercial (Super cheesy, but my clothes were becoming tighter, and I weighed more than I ever had before, as I was approaching my 30’s.). I was excited, and hopeful, to have a chance to lose some weight, learn some new things, and practice being in front of the camera, at the same time. I was chosen, along with 30 other people, for the ab infomercial. We were given a personal trainer, three days a week, for seven weeks, along with healthier diet options. During those seven weeks, I lost 10 pounds, and I was back to my college weight and body. I was so inspired by the personal trainer, and my results, that I decided to gain my credentials as a personal trainer. This would help keep me in shape and still allow for a flexible schedule to go on auditions. Soon after I passed my exam, I started working as a personal trainer at a local gym.Shortly after that, I was given an opportunity to teach yoga at the gym. I did a short yoga training program through YogaFit and was given my first yoga class. After teaching my first class, I felt as if I were floating. Everything changed in that moment for me. It was a feeling of joy, comfort, and excitement. I remember calling my mom and explaining this feeling to her. She said, “If you find something to do, that you would do for free, and someone is willing to pay you for it, you’ve found what you are meant to be doing.” It was in that moment that I felt like I had found out why I was put on this earth. I immediately switched my focus from the entertainment industry to the fitness industry. In the following few months, I completed my 200 Hour RYT through Yoga Alliance, and have been building my business ever since. It is a labor of love. It fills me up beyond words, and I am so grateful to be a part of this thriving industry.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a bumpy road, with many ups and downs. It has taken me a long time to build my business, to where it is today, and I am still building, and growing, all the time. Working as an instructor, and personal trainer is a hustle. Driving from class to class, putting strain and stress on the body, advertising, and marketing, among other things, has definitely kept me busy over the years.

At one point, I was teaching 18 classes a week, and training clients privately, at five different locations, going from 6 am to 7, or 8 pm. It can wear you down if you take on too much.  My advice to any instructor is to set boundaries, and a schedule, that works for you and your peace of mind. I have had to let classes and clients go over the years, which is no easy task. You build relationships with your students, and it is really hard to leave. I have finally gotten to a point where my schedule fits my needs and allows me the freedom in life I so deeply appreciate.

As I attempt to teach patience and gratitude to my students, I find myself often having to learn, and relearn, those very things myself. It is a day to day, moment by moment, learning and growing experience. I expect it will be for many years to come.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I work with people, one on one, in a private setting, to meet their needs, and goals, in a safe, fun setting. I lead a Beach Yoga practice, in Playa Del Rey, on Saturday mornings. I also teach yoga classes, pilates classes, and total body conditioning classes at several corporate, and family, gyms on the West side of Los Angeles as well as the Yoga Nest in Venice. I like to think that I specialize in making people feel good while they are moving, it’s that simple. I believe what sets me apart is my sense of humor, and the freedom and lightheartedness, found in my sessions. Whether in a class, or in a private session, I encourage my clients to listen to their body, to honor what they are feeling, and to move from that place. I ask that things not be taken too seriously. I believe that if you are having fun, and feeling a sense of accomplishment, you will move towards your goals with ease and happiness. The gyms and yoga studios can be very intimidating for people who are new. I strive to make everyone feel welcomed and at home. I am most proud of myself for persevering and not giving up when things got rough. Lately I have slowly began to “practice what I preach” as far as self-care and listening to my body. I am also learning to set boundaries honoring my time and my health.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
This is tough. Picking one moment is like picking one drop out of the entire ocean. It seems impossible. I remember fondly all of the times a student has been touched, or uplifted, by a class I’ve taught. I feel amazing when a student says “Thank you so much! That is just what I needed.” I love when I get a giggle from one of my silly jokes during a class. I truly believe many of my students, and clients, have become lifelong friends. I am proud to be an example to my family and friends, that you can have a career that fills you up and makes you happy. Every class I teach, and every client I work privately with, presents a new opportunity to uplift a fellow human being. There is nothing more fulfilling than this.

Kasey teaches yoga and pilates in our gym and I just love her classes! She helps me to get to that right place where I’m myself and not what some else thinks or expects. Thanks, Kasey!
